Help with Ext HDD.

I just plugged my Seagate 1TB ext drive into my PC for the first time since I upgraded to Win8 and had to do a fresh install.

Some things work, pics/videos/some music but some music wont play. It says 'file may be been used in other programme or I may not have the right permissions to use'

Does anybody know how to fix it? I changed the permission settings to the best of my knowledge but they still wont work.

Would the fresh install make it think it is a new computer?? I am sure it was set to 'everyone' for access before and it still is now.

Any help appreciated.

'Everyone' on the old install won't be the same as 'Everyone' on the new install.

Take ownership of all of the files and then reassign all of the permissions as necessary. You'll probably need to go into the advanced security options to be able to see what's going on properly.

I did this and it worked, thank you.

How can I take ownership of multiple files? It only lets me do one at a time.

Start from a parent folder and look at its advanced security settings. On the owner tab there should be an edit button that opens a new dialog. The new dialog will allow you to set the owner and also has an option to apply the change to child objects.

Ok thanks, will try when I get home.

I think I was missing out the 'child' bit.
