Whilst I wait for my Samsung 400Gb sata to be rma'd, i'm currently using a maxtor 200Gb pata hdd on my comp to boot win xp pro from.
As i had my seagate 400gb pata hdd sitting around from my uni machine (win xp pro sp3 i think) i though i'd connect that and use some of the music and videos stored on there.

After connecting as slave it appeared in bios, but the computer took 5 mins or so to load once loaded the drive doesn't appear in my computer, but is listed under hardware manager.
Following spending half hour changing jumper settings and trying drives individually i used usb-pata converter. This time in windows it installed as external device but once again didn't appear in my comp, but is still listed in hardware manager.

I know this drive previously worked with this computer, 1. with the samsung sata drive & 2. as external usb device.

Without me having to dig my uni computer out of the garage to check it still works in that machine does anyone have any suggestions as to anything I've missed?
Sorry for the long post.

Just to update,

have tried re-connecting hdd to computer i removed from & despite being recognised in bios, computer didn't boot and came up with message along the lines of 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media'.
Is it possible to do a repair installation of Windows & hope it works?
will also get round to running seagate disk tools sometime.

As there are files on the drive that i need, what other ways are there possible for me to retrieve them if Windows won't repair? Drive recovery software?
As last resort, could i use a professional data recovery company? if so who & any ideas about cost?
