Help with hard drive

My father in law has an IDE hard drive that has photos on it that comes up with the words that it needs to be formatted when put in an enclosure. It was from a PC that he no longer has.

Any ideas as to how I can try and get the data off of it?

Would a live Linux cd work? Any program I can try? Thanks

What file format was the drive? If it was anything fancy windows might not read it.

Everytime i plug the drive into my pc the pc shows a blue screen and it wont restart until i unplug the drive!!!

This fatal for the drive?
