Hi All.

I recently bought a Zyxel NSA310 NAS drive and was so disappointed with it that it's going back. I'm not interested in the media server side of things, just want a way to store my files on a home network so i can access them from any computer/ipad/iphone.

My main issue with the Zyxel is that it is sooooo slow! It took forever to transfer files to it and using it got frustrating as files would take a while to open. Could the speed be due to my wireless connection?

I was looking at these:

I was also looking at a Buffalo Livestation for about £100 (Unfortunately not on OCUK).

Can anyone offer any help or advice? Much appreciated.

I ahve been using Synology two bay ones for some time now and they are great. Software really good, easy to setup. And they ahve some good ios apps for accessing your files/media whilst home or out and about. SO if I had to choose one it would be the synology one. Qnap also do a range which are worth looking at but my preference is Synology.

Regards wireless, I would avoid that if possible. I have my HTPC connected using homeplugs which work well, although not as fast as I would like tbh. I would invest in a quality enclosure and HD combo and sort your network out. Wired, be it directly with etehrnet or using homeplugs if they work in your environment woudl be the best way forward imho.

That's not to say mind the buffalo station or WD alternative wouldn't necessarily suit your needs. I do however think you will see the best gain in whatever you choose by ditching wireless, or at leats trying to boost it if you can't.

Thanks for your reply. Are the home plugs any good for speed? Is it possible to get similar speeds to that you get from a USB 2.0 external hdd?

I find homeplugs fine for streaming movies from my nas to the htpc downstairs. All depends on many things though such as wiring etc

Should be much faster than wireless.

I too recently bought a Synology.

If you are just storing files there and doing streaming from it to say your TV then dont get caught up in all the transfer rates numbers.

I bought a 4 bay nas, the Synology DS411j.

Its the 'slowest' 4 bay nas they do - and thus the cheapest. i bought it and atm have 2 x 2Tb HDD's in there raised using the synology raid which gives redundancy.

At some point ill either by 2 more 3Tb or 4Tb drives. So I have an expansion path.

The 'slowest' 4 bay nas can stream 3 simaltaneous HD streams to 3 different devices. just incase you were worried about bandwidth. This is on a gigabit network/router tho.

Software is EASY and intuitive. Great product.
