Hi

My brother has just had Virgin installed in his house. The problem is that the Cable modem is downstairs in the living room but his pc is upstairs!! He told the fitters to put the cable downstairs as he was buying a Router.

Well, he has just bought a Nertgear Cable router and a PCI Wireless adapter.

Can he setup the router wirelessly by installing the wireless adapter first in his PC or does he need to take his PC downstairs and do it through an Ethernet cable?

It's always best to setup a wireless router from a wired connection. He could always take the new router upstairs to the pc and configure it there. The only thing it won't receive is the settings from VM. He should also install the wireless PCI card at the same time and make sure it's talking to the wireless router. When the wireless is all sorted and locked down with WPA, take the router back downstairs and plug it into the cable modem. Once the wireless router has synced with the cable modem the PC should be able to see the router via the wireless and get on the net.

Thanks. Will try that first

You will have to enable the wireless AP in the router first via an ethernet cable, i beleive its not enabled as standard on netgears cable variety, unlike there adsl routers which it is. After that its pretty easy to setup wirelessly.

So, i can connect the router to the pc via the ethernet cable then once i have gone into the Wireless section of it and activated it i can then put the PCI wireless adapter in the pc, take the router back downstairs and then carry on configuring it upstairs via the PC wireless adapter?

No problems at all.

Connected straight away.
Added my MAC to the access list and then turned on MAC filtering.
Created WPA2 Passphrase & applied. Got disconnected.
Filled in WPA2 Passphrase on the PC. Reconnected.
Sorted.

That was with a Netgear DG834GT

As stated above though you might want to check that the Cable models have Wireless eneabled as default. Even if they don't it would just be case of connecting the router briefly to enable the wireless.
