hey peeps.

Thought id build myself a new rig. My old one was a athlon64 3200+, 1gb pc3200 ram and a ati x800gto 256mb.

Controversial but with nehalem (new socket) just around the corner I think this represents good value and certainly has much life if you clock the 2180 to 3.2 ghz.
In my opinion a duo at 3ghz + is all you still need really and therefore get a cheapo now which is more than good enough at 3ghz + then you can sell that on and pick up an even cheaper 8500 as and when needed.

I know everyones crazy about the 8400/8500 at the mo but you don't really need it most games are gpu dependant if you want to pay £100 more for 10 frames per second up to you though.

I have a 4850 a duo 6420 that can do 3.5 ghz but I leave it at 3.2 because 3.5 doesn't really make a difference and just uses more power and creates more heat 3.2 ghz is a nice sweetspot.

Any core 2 duo @ 3ghz + and 4850 will eat any game alive (except crysis) for a long time yet.

not too bothered about aero or dvd software so ive just gone for vista home basic. Also got the ballistix rather than the geil purely for the timings. I know it makes sense to buy cheaper parts then easily overclock them but my last 2 pc's fried because of it. Im just looking for a fast system out the box that will do what its told :p

is everything ok and compatible? Ive been out of the "game" for so long.

don't see why you're so concerned with the timings, the crucial stuff needs 2,2v according to their spec, i'd seriously consider going for the GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon, if you really wont budge because of the timings go for the GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE.

swap the processor to the 8400/8500 both will be better out the box and if you decide to overclock later on.
 
C64 has specced the same parts I would recommend. I would say that you could spend an extra £6 for the Corsair TX650, but apart from that, it is great. It really is a good idea to save the money and go for the E series chips now, you aren't going to lose any major performance with it. Gives you more money to get a Nehalem!
