Help with Overclock

Firstly ensure the Round Off Checking option is ticked in P95.

If it's unstable it will either stop one of the 4 threads, or will reboot the computer. But rebooting is usually reserved for very unstable systems.

You can check it every so often to make sure temps aren't going too high and that a thread hasn't failed.

I would set it to Small FFT's for the meantime.

Blend tests the memory too, but it's not really needed atm.

I've been testing for 15 mins now yet the temps are steady at 74 73 69 66.
Doesn't look good from what I understand, should I keep her going?
I have all the fans on full and I even re-arranged the cables in the case for better air-flow.
Is there anything else you think I should do?

I would let it run on. 74c on Prime95 Small FFTs about the sane limit tho.

But keep an eye on it, esp if you turn the heating on/up later this evening.

Ran Prime95 for : 5 hours, 54 mins - 0 Errors 0 Warnings

Average Temps: 73 73 69 66

I don't understand why it's running so hot. Anyway, what would your advise be now?

HAPPY NEW YEAR and all the best to you and your family for the New Year.

I would leave it where it is for now, or buy a new fan for the heatsink.

Happy New Year :)

I've been reading up on many guides over the web in relation to thermal paste, some say just a rice grain as others like the guide you sent show a horizontal line. I'm not 100% but I still feel that there maybe to much applied.

I might try and use a grain of rice amount (just enough to cover the 4 cores) and trial an error it. I've also read that it can take upto 200 hours for the paste to work properly.

Turning my fans up full makes hardly any difference. wpould you recommend applying to fans to the heatsink and what fans do you recommend? Also, do you think the cpu fan is running slow at it's current speed of I think I stated 1288rpm before?

Yeah 1288rpm is more of a quiet fan than a performance fan.

The Zalman ZM-F3 is meant to be pretty good from recent tests.

You can also try lowering the vcore a notch or two since it passed a good run of Prime 95 last night.

As im new to this what would be your advice on getting the correct v.core?

Would I continue lowering it running prime until I get to the correct v.core?

I may buy 2 of the fans you mentioned and mount them to the heatsink.

Thanks again

Yip keep lowering the vcore til it stops passing Prime95, and then raise it back up a notch.

I have just ordered ;

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)
Zalman ZM-F3 120mm Silent Case Fan

Do you think these will help in relation to my temps and would you advise in just placing a grain of rice size of compound or as described in the link you provided where a thin line of compund is placed through the centre of the CPU?

I've drilled some holes inside my case and with a little modding I have managed to place all the cables away from the inside so air can freely move, I'm hoping that will help matters as it took me hours ;(

I've also heard you can overclock the 8800GTS 640 by flashing the firmware is this advisable or are the results not that noticeable and maybe worth leaving alone?

Thanks all

Hopefully they'll help. Them and tidying up the cables should have some effect.

I've no idea about the graphics card tho.

Would download Rivatunner to O/C the graphics card, am at work but is a guide somewhere about on the net as well will try and find it for you later

It looks like I've managed to achieve 5-7 degrees cooler :) I'm going to run P95 for a while and see how she goes and compare results. Then hopefully a little more room for more overclocking. :)

I always thought there was no need to overclock but now since I have found OCUK I find it great and I love the challenge.

Thanks all

I have run P95 for 2 hours with no problems, average temps are below;

3240.00 - 63 63 59 58

I never did change the v.core as I knew I was going to purchase the extra cooling to see if that worked, of which it has.

When I ran P95 prior to the extra cooling the average temps were;

3240.00 - 73 73 69 66

I near 10 degrees lower, do you think this is a good result and do you think I should be able to get a better overclock?

Shall I go back and continue overclocking and testing with P95 and shall I keep the v.core as it is?

Thanks for your advice on the purchase and I must say OCUK delivered on time, no problems at all. A service well worth coming back to, there are not many companies out there which allow you to order with no problems. Ordered, Received Confirmation of Order/Despatch and received Next Day.. EXCELLANT :)

I think it's a bloody good result, providing the temp in your room hasn't dropped by 10c since you did the 73 73 69 66 test.

I would keep the same vcore for the time being. No need to raise it until Prime fails.

I have run P95 for 3 hours 10 mins with no problems, average temps are below;

3420.00 68 68 65 63

3420MHz (380.00 x 9.0) 1.4v

What do you recommend now should I try and go further or do you think I should keep it as it is with the temps above?

Ive read that the 965 restricts overclocks, is this true? I haven't noticed any issues so far.

All help appreciated
