Hi all,

I have two partitions, one with Vista on that I am currently using and the other with Server 2003 on.

I want to format the server 2003 partition and merge it with the vista one without having to remove the vista data.

Is this possible and if so how?

Many Thanks

Won't work as Windows Vista will not allow you to format it due to the partition containing Windows files. What you can do is;

Boot the computer up with a Windows XP or Server 2003 cd. Delete the partition containing Server 2003, restart the PC load into Windows Vista then go to, Control Panel -> Administrative tools ->> Computer Managment ->>> Disk Managment.

In there, right click the Vista partition, go to 'Extend Volume' and then it should, from there allow you to extend it to the full size of the old partiton you just removed. :)

ice on fire is correct:)

vista can be a bit of a pain with somethings like this, but i guess we shall get used to it.

not necessarily. we don't have enough detail to establish this. what if windows 2003 was installed first on drive c. and then vista next on drive d. if we boot from cd and format c, vista won't boot anymore because it's boot loader was on c..... :)

we need more info from the OP.

I've tried the extend partition but it doesn't give me that option. Have also tried this using diskpart.exe.

The server 2003 drive is completely formatted now so doesn't contain anything. I have re-installed Vista but even during the installation with both drives empty, it doesn't give me the option to merge the partitions together.
