I have an Enermax Galaxy 1000w PSU and after upgrading my graphics card to a 290x from a 6970 i've noticed the PSU fan get quite loud during gaming.

My PSU is about 7 years old now and it's given me a good run and it's still running strong but this fan noise is quite annoying.

What is a good PSU I can replace my one with, there are too many so I'm clueless what to go for?

Thanks

Do you ever plan on running two cards, if not another 1000W is way over what you need?

A good quality 600-650W would be fine and have a fair overhead.

Well Superflower or EVGA are good buys:

For a R9 290X 1000watts are a little overkill unless you are going to crossfire later.

EVGA SuperNova G2 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W

The 750W or 850W will be more than enough.

The Superflowers come with 5 year warranty and the EVGA come with 10 year.

(Can't really say much as picked up a Superflower 1000W (Turned out to be a 1300W) PSU for my R9 290, best l get another R9 290)

I don't plan to run two cards but would like to be future proof as current one is on 7 years now.

I'd like to go for a 850w. I have no budget just want the best available.

Trying to read reviews online, will look at the mentioned.

No need for 850W but if you insist then don't look any further than the EVGA Supernova G2.

YOUR BASKET
1 x EVGA SuperNova G2 850W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £107.99
Total : £117.59 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I forgot to mention I would like the PSU to have low fan noise and no coil whine. Is the EVGA good in regards to that?

Thanks

As your Galaxy 1KW must be out of warranty by now have you considered just opening her up and upgrading the fan? Would be significantly cheaper than a new PSU.

IIRC the Galaxy 1KW has a 135mm fan in the base and a 80mm in the rear whichever one (or both) are causing the noise you can easily get modern replacements that move the same air with less noise.

I haven't considered that but I think a new power supply will be better as the current one is really old and has multiple 12v rails with limited amps which might not be enough for newer hardware.

Just saw your edit, it's the 80mm one located in the rear. I could take it out and use it on a 2nd build machine.

I haven't seen any mention of coil whine from these psu's. They come with a pretty impressive 10 year warranty.

If you do replace it then it's defiantly worth keeping for a second build, it was the Superflower LeadeX of it's day, only rated at 80Plus because that was the top spec then, it's almost Silver by modern standards.

Yes, i think it was the only high end PSU available at the time and it served me well.

Thanks for the all the input guys. After checking a lot of reviews, I'll be going for the EVGA SuperNova G2 850W :)

Hi, this is a good choice :)
Our PSUs do now also benefit from our promotions, when you register the PSU to your EVGA Account you can then request Rise of the Triade at the promotion section. In case there is any question or concern about the product do not hesitate to contact us!

Thanks didn't know about this, I brought a SuperNova G2 1000W last week. So I get it registered.

That's of course if you can actually read the Serial Number on the box....cos I cant , that print is way too small ...and I wear strong reading glasses

Anyway I gave up with that lark...way too long winded for what could a lot simpler in my opinion

Plus...my PSU was given to me by someone as a present , so I dont have the proof of purchase .

I do like the way that 3D Realms have changed their name back to Apogee after DNF flopped so hard XD

Hopefully they will finally release the last Commander Keen episode now...
