Help with ram timings

Just built a new computer using an intel e5300 and 2x1gb of kingston hyperx. It says it will run at 4/4/4/12 but if I set it at these timings it refuses to boot. Even if I go plus 0.4volts on the ram it then boots but crashes. Any ideas. Runs fine at 5/5/5/18.

Try taking out the stick furthest from the CPU leaving just the single stick nearest the CPU and try again . . . 400MHz (DDR2-800) 5-5-5-x then 4-4-4-12 with either the memory voltage on [Auto] or manually set in BIOS to the manufacturer's recommended value . . .

If it passes move the stick to the second slot and repeat . . .

If your not already using it then download Memtest86+ V4.00 and make a bootable CD-ROM for testing!

If the first stick passes in both slots at both set of timings then swap out sticks and repeat the testing process again . . .

You could have a faulty stick of ram but the above testing should help you zero in on the problem!

On the outside chance both sticks work fine when run separately in both slots *and* at both sets of timings then we can look towards the motherboard chipset (NB) as a possible cause!

Hi. Tested 1 stick and it booted straight away and ran a few games ok. Put the other stick in on its own and it blue screened straight away. Time to send the ram back I think. Thanks for the help.
