I received this tablet as a Christmas bonus: http://www.ergoelectronics.com/products/7-inch-gotab-android-tablet-gbt740rs#.UPMpVmSnwVU

I've tried superoneclick which reported that it was already rooted but I still haven't been able to access system files. I'm trying to root it to fix a problem with the inbuilt dictionary.

I've already tried installing a couple of keyboard and dictionary apps with no success.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Does the root checker app say it's rooted?

What's wrong with the inbuilt dictionary?

It highlights most words as wrong. I have checked to make sure it's set to the right language. Apparently it's a problem with some of the cheap Chinese tablets.

Root checker app says it's not rooted.

Try going onto the market and install SuperSU, see if it works. You may also need to install Busybox.

These devices are not always setup to stop rooting all together.

I downloaded this as you described last night, but I can't unzip the zip file - it doesn't give me an option to do so, but asks me what type of programme i want to use to open it.

can you advise on this please?

thank you

Hi nickelbabe, should just be able to open it with your archive manager of choice. Try right clicking, select open with and pick explorer if you're still having problems. Perhaps try downloading it again in case the .zip file has become corrupt. If you still can't open it then I recommend 7zip, you can download it here: www.7-zip.org/

After that you should have a .bat file which you simply double click to launch. Just make sure that the tablet is connected, set to usb debugging mode and that unknown sources is enabled.

I've also got a Gotab gbt740rs (Cheap Xtravision Xmas gift) and I'd like to root it, I have put it in USB debugging mode and enable unknown sources on tablet and also successfully extracted to my PC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidroot ICS Root unlocker - the rooting software mentioned above) but when I click on the .bat file it says it cannot find the device this is not surprising because when I hook up the USB cable to the device, Windows 7 searches for the software drivers but cannot find them. How did you get this tablet to handshake in USB debugging mode ? Is there a driver I can download somewhere?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Yeah I figured it out so I may as well post it here: The Gotab gbt740rs is not recognised by Window 7 PC in USB debugging mode. You need to choose XP drivers on the go tab but this will bring up DOS message stating that these type of drivers are already installed but it also create a virtual CD drive with the adb driver files. Copy these files and save them to a folder on your desktop or somewhere handy. Next open your device manager and you will probably see a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark and text stating 'Android' this is caused by the PC not having the correct driver. You now need to right click on 'android' and choose update driver from the popup menu, then browse to the XP drivers you saved and choose the .inf file. A warning will pop up stating drive signature not verified/safe etc do you wish to proceed, state yes and proceed, you will then see in the device manager that the USB drivers are installed. You can then run the above .bat file available from sourceforge to quickly and easily root the device. This was done two nights ago so this description is from memory but you should get the gist of it. Best of luck!

Glad you got it sorted. I didn't have any driver issues when rooting mine from Windows 7 but I think I did mine from my 32-bit laptop rather than my 64-bit desktop.
