Hi peeps I’m new here and I’m trying to set up a tp-wr940n router with vpn connected to a sky fibre q box but I just want a android box and two smart non android TVs connected to it I also have ipvanish subscription but don’t have a clue how to set up could someone help me would be greatly appreciated thanks

I think you’ll need to put the Sky Q box into modem mode before connecting it to the WAN port of the router. IPVanish should have info on their website about how to set up a VPN with a router. Your router does support VPNs?

No need for 'modem mode' (if the Sky Q even supports it).

The second router would be double NAT, but that wouldn't matter in this scenario.

Presumably you want to one router for VPN connections and the other for non VPN?

What VPN capabilities does that router have? Does it have enough processing power to provide a decent throughput? Was it chosen as a device that's know to support what you're trying to do?

Edit: Just had a quick look at the specs and there's no mention of any specific VPN capabilities.

I had Openvpn on my few years old wdr-3600 and had around 20Mbit throughout. I had to flash it with DD-WRT. It might have been faster with less heavy VPN encryption solutions though.

In the end I decided to run the Openvpn on an Odroid C1 instead and get around 50Mbit throughput. This little device also runs a NAS and a torrent client for me.

Your router doesn’t support acting as a VPN client out of the box.

According to IPVanish you’re going to need to custom firmware on it. Once you do that you can follow their instructions:

https://www.ipvanish.com/vpn-setup/routers/

Looks like your router supports DD-WRT firmware according to this : https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/ so put that on which will give you the capability and allow you to follow IPVanish,s instructions for DD-WRT.

As @Tealc warns, it won’t be that fast if that’s a problem for you.

Thanks for the reply’s

I just need it to view iptv and maybe some music downloads etc
Prob is I think this is version six

Or would a raspberry pi be better

Or what would be a cheap option for something better

Thanks for your repsonses

IPTV streams don't tend to go >8-10Mbps so as long as it is one stream only then a consumer router should be OK.

I wanted the same setup as you but I ran into the problem of the router not being powerful enough to give me a good connection through VPN. In the end I purchased a Linksys wrt1900acs v2 and flashed DD-WRT on it. On this I have 3 SSID's; 1 for normal network, 1 for VPN use and then a guest network. This is probably a little overkill but it I can max my speed of 26mb though the VPN and I have everything on 1 router.

You want to watch IPTV via VPN to avoid blocking, firstly check the provider is OK with this as accounts can get locked if the abuse detection system was set up by a muppet.

Next up before you throw money at the situation, why not test that your choice of VPN provider and IPTV provider work well together? Follow the instructions IPVanish provide and set it up in your Android box. If it works then flash the router with DDWRT and see if it will manage to provide a suitable amount of bandwidth, in general consumer routers lack an FPU or any form of hardware acceleration for encryption, this is slowly changing, but only at the ‘prosumer’ end of the market for now (prosumer=£££). If what you have can do 10-15Mbit then you’re probably fine for 1-2 streams as most are 720 at best.

I have a general and long standing hatered for almost all android based STB hardware, it’s usually horribly designed/supported and genrally an inefficient POS, the exception is the Shield.
