Hi,

I have a Virgin cable modem and have it connected to my old SKY Netgear ASDL wireless router via an ethernet cable but I can't get it to send out a wireless connection. The wireless light on the router is not lit up.

Is this because I have to connect it via a ADSL connection to get wireless? My PC and PS3 all work fine with ethernet cables conneted but I need to get the wireless laptop working.

Do I need to get a wireless cable Modem not a ASDL.

Many thanks.

From what I can tell, the Virgin media packages include a wireless N modem/router. However you want to use the Netgear to provide routing.

Have you appropriately configured the Netgear on the 'Wireless Settings' page via the web interface? A reboot might be required as I've occasionally seen changes that didn't apply properly.

For clarification are the PC and PS3 connected to the Virgin modem or the Netgear?

Both PS3 & PC are connected to the netgear via ethernet cables with no problems. I have a wireless laptop that works fine at work but not at home.

It's a ASDL moden which was designed for SKY broadband and has an ASDL connection and 4x ethernet connections. Do I have to connect my cable modem via the ASDL connection to enable wireless?

My Virgin modem is connected via ethernet which in turn enables my PC & ps3 to work which are also connected via ethernet. But the moden does not output any wireless connection for the laptop to pick up. This is why I am thinking that I may have to get a Cable Ethernet router which connects via ethernet rather than ASDL.

I can't see what I can do via the laptop to get the router to give a wireless connection.

you can use most ADSL-modems as just a router/ just a wireless access point, etc.

not using the ADSL modem part should have zero impact on the wireless part. it just need configuring most likely, which you do by accessing the built-in web page, normally at either 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, or similar.

if the wireless light isn't on, typically the wireless function is either disabled, or broken.

I've encountered one Huwai router which completely lost wireless functionality when factory reset. it even disappeared from the web page setup options too. you'd know if you'd done that, however, since it involves holding reset for about 30 seconds whilst the power is off, and keeping it held after powering on.

Okay thanks.

So I need to connect my pc and go to the built in web page. http:/192.168.1.1 or similar.

How do I know what the webpage is for my router??
