ok im freaking out here

i cant find a decent review

i posted here a while back and ended up building a system

heres what i got at the moment

intel quad core extreme qx6850

Asus P5e3 Deluxe Wifiap motherboard

1tb hdd

zalmann heat sink

corsair tx750w

only 2gb of ddr3

ati radeon x1600 (temporary until i decide)

im really going nuts here guys

i just built this rig then i7 rolled onto the scene

before i go buy corsair dominator ram and a 4870x2

i was thinking of dumping this rig and going i7

can someone who REALLY knows tell me whether i should just buy the ram and video card and be done or whether i should sell my mobo/cpu and add some cash and go i7

i want to be future proof for all the upcoming games, i want to not even have to think to put all the games at the highest setting

is my motherboard and cpu future proof with x ram and x video card?

is it worth going i7

if so , which one is the best bang for the buck?

which is the best i7 motherboard for the money

4970x2 or gtx285/295?

whats the best ddr3 ram?

and again all future proof

thanks for helping me out its a ton of questions but im getting extremely frustrated because my rig is not as blazing fast as i thought it would be but im thinking maybe that's just the ram

i7 barely gives you any real world gains within games, so don't bother with that. Your CPU is plenty.

Personally I would buy yourself a single 1GB 4890 for now. I believe (can someone correct me on this if I'm wrong) that that motherboard supports crossfire, so in future if you need to upgrade you can then either get a brand new card, or a second 4890. They are a great price at the moment, and ought to max out all games with the possible exception of Crysis.

If you do want something quicker, I'd go with the GTX285, as I've never really trusted "doubled up" cards. However, as your board doesn't support SLI, I'd stick to the 4890, as it will offer you more options in the future.

Afraid that I don't know what DDR3 RAM to suggest, I'm still sat on DDR2 at the moment :D

Finally, your rig isn't blazingly fast (at least in games) because your GPU blows. A little more RAM wouldn't hurt, but you really need a new graphics card above all else!

Ok dude, don't worry, calm down :)

First, let me say that you current rig is very nice and it would be a pleasure to play any games on it. The i7 may seem like the ultimate jusus chip - but to be honest it is so powerful that it becomes overkill - all games will be heavily graphics bound before the i7 gets tested.

With that said, a cheeky overclock of your cpu (3.5Ghz should be do-able with a decent cooler) and a very nice graphics card (4870X2, gtx 295) you will be playing new games on top settings for maybe 2 year or more.

Other upgrades you should consider is bumping up the RAM to 4GB (as you suggested) and getting a TRUE /noctua u12p cooler.

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions I'd be happy to respond.

ok so im going to go with 6gb of ddr3 corsair dominator

a 4870x2 because i want overkill

but the ddr3 should i go with 1600 1800 or 2000 which one is future proof yet still not crazily expensive, is it better to go with 1800mhz of less or 1600mhz with more gb

but if i was say to sell my mobo cpu and go i7 which one would you recommend and whats the best motherboard to go with?

I think you're taking the ****. There's no way you asked for advice here then bought a qx6850 anyway. Nonetheless,

Be aware that there are two types of ddr3. One set runs at 1.9V ish, the other at a maximum of 1.65V. Check which set you need, I suspect x38 wants 1.9V kits. Your board takes dual channel memory, so don't get a tri channel set. So no 6gb kits.

A 4870x2 is slower than two 4890s.

That board is very nice. If you haven't discovered that the D0 stepping 920 is by far the favorite i7 chip you haven't done any research whatsoever.

This is a very good no-fuss solution for you. All of the components are very good (mobo/RAM are my personal favourites) and it will come pre-overclocked to 4GHz.

I was going to say this!!! ;)

A QX6850?? Runs hotter than hell, power draining older technology quad core. They still cost a lot as well.
My QX6750 cost £576 when it came out.
If you're a gamer the E8400 would be a damned good chip to use, half the power consumption of your QX6850, less L2 cache, but hey ho! Hardly any games take advantage of 4 cores yet. And by the time they do, your QX6850 would be well and truly obsolete.

yes, a guy was going to sell it to me for 250$ but then flaked out on me so i never ended up having a 4870x2

and i did post here before but no one ever really gave me any advice on what cpu to buy they were just arguing about what was the right graphics card

then i had to stall on building my system because some issues came up and the moeny i had saved went elsewhere

so im justifying because i dont want to seem like a liar

i bought the qx6850 because i bought it as a combo with the mobo and 2gb of ddr3 for 400$ i had no clue what i was buying but it seemed like a good deal but now im not sure whether or not it was a good buy so im wondering whether or not i should sell it on ebay and add some cash and get an i7

so now the question lies, which i7 is the best for money, 920, 940 ..

and i cant seem to get any solid review of whats better the 4870x2 or the gtx series

i am very serious about this rig im just extremely confused

any help is appreciated

so again i did post for advice here if you search under my username but no one told me specifically of any parts they were all just generalizing

So this thread has now turned into a 'spec me' thread and you are certain now that you want to go the i7 route as opposed to overclocking your CPU and buying a new graphics card?

Better tell these guys your budget and sell your current mobo, CPU and RAM or ask for more advice on what to do with your current system.

A note on reviews for the graphics cards, there are loads of reviews showing benchmarks for the 4870X2 and the Nvidia GTX series, get on google.

ok so final question

in order to play games on a hdtv 23" screen

if i bought a gtx295 would it still be worth it to upgrade my mobo cpu to i7
or should i just overclock what i have, thanks

if amto overclock whats the best cooling methods
