Hi all,

Im new to PC Gaming and I am struggling like hell to get used to using a keyboard and mouse to flay FPS Games like Battlefield and COD.

Im just getting owned everytime!

Any help or ideas to help me along? :)

Practice, practice, and some more practice.

It's a lot more accurate and responsive than using a gaming pad - I personally struggle to see how people can't get used to m+k, it's a lot more natural

+1

I was the same when going from PC gaming to playing on my PS3, keep at it and you will get used to it.

Better start racking up the hours then!

Ive got an Xbox 360 controller but only use it for my driving games as I dont think it works with FPS games unless you use ~Xpadder or something. Even then the games meant to be played with a mouse and keyboard so thats what I will do....badly! :D

I was the same before christmas

used controlers for the past 10 years. then im faced with battlefield 3 and i kept getting owned i could not react quick enough and i could not control my gun on long shots.

I started with the m + k and struggled but after a few hours i picked up the xbox controler and realised even though i was rubbish on the m + k i was better than i was on the controler...

stick with it and practice it is indeed worth it, even now i struggle to remember what button to press but it just takes time

i was in the same boat last year when i started pc gaming..

i just stuck with the keyboard and mouse and now i love it so much better than using a pad.

in fact i turned the ps3 on the other day and i now cannot use the pad at all, i just cant aim with it...

Natural in what way? Neither of them are really natural. The closest to natural is the Wii/Ps3 Move.

Natural in the sense that you move where you want the cursor / crosshairs to be.

Whereas with controllers, you have to nudge it towards where you want - there's a lot more precision with a mouse is what I guess I'm hitting at.

Just feels natural to me - I have as big a space as I want to look around. Using a controller you're limited to a little thumb-stick. It just doesn't compare.

You can use your xbox 360 pad, they work with a whole bunch of PC games these days including FPS.

If it doesn't work natively, then you can use xpadder if you wish to.

Although, I'd advise against using a gamepad if you're playing multiplayer, you'll really struggle to keep up with the responses of kb+m that the opposing team will most likely be using.

other point to consider is that everynoe has upgraded equipment and you don't. You have to not only get used to m+k but also get some better gear, get used to the maps, positions etc. I got owned heavily on BF3 at the start, can hold my own now (mostly). Just practice and you'll get there. Adjust the mouse sensitivity though.

Thanks for all the replies Ill see how i get on : having more luck with bad company 2 atm. Prefer it to BC3 anyways for some reason just seems more fun :)

Natural in what way?
An analogue stick is very similar to a mouse. Both get moved across a linear range mimicking the movement in the game. But the stick's range is very small compared to the range available and configurable for the mouse. So you have to be much more precise with an analogue stick, with very fine thumb control... which is not what our thumbs are generally used for in life (on their own). So it is a little unnatural, which is why a degree of auto-aim is pretty much default on console games.

With a mouse you have a very large, configurable range, and a hand/arm movement which is much more instinctive. That's why the mouse has been such a monumental computing success while the trackball faded away to very niche uses.

Having said all this to encourage the OP, I got a PS3 a year ago (my first console experience ever) just for GT5, and I use a wheel for that. I have tried to learn the controller so I can play big titles like Uncharted, but I think I left it about 40 years too late to try and learn. My thumbs are not at all impressed. So I can sympathise with the OP greatly. :-)

In my case I probably don't care enough to put in the hours because the returns won't be worthwhile. Mainly because there are very few titles which will ever be PS3 only that I'll want to play. The good thing about the PC is that you get nearly all the console titles and the whole range of more "serious" games & simulations as well.

Right, I'm off now to go remind myself why my controller is dusty. I may get through level three of the Little Big Planet demo one of these days. ;-)

I made the switch over from console, and i'm going to open a can of worms and say that the majority of the people who play on PC are harder to play against than those on console.

Also make sure that you have a decent mouse and a keyboard that you feel comfertable with using!

That's not that controversial, PC gamers tend to be a bit more into it for the competitiveness in general I think compared to console gamers.

Definitely agree with that. Probably got something to do with the fact console gaming is full of ten year olds
