Hero 690 boards burning up

From hero to zero Asus.

Funny in a way... As in since all the shortages, Covid, lockdowns, shortage of parts, factories locked down, it seems to be lots of parts failing or rushed from such high demands or corners cut? EVGA with certain components on their cards ended up with no video output. Gigabyte with the exploding power supplies, NZXT with the dodgy manufactured riser cables and now Asus with certain motherboards and faulty parts... What next?

Funny how also Jay never got ripped into Asus unlike how he does on Gigabyte.

Possible polarised capacitor not added to mobo right way round?

ps3ud0

This is almost certainly the issue - a faulty batch of motherboards built with this specific capicitor with reverse (incorrect) polarity. Just checked my board - thankfully mine's the right way around.

Surprised to see this from ASUS though, even if it is just a small hardful of boards affected.

Now who has time for proper QC when they're laughing their butts off while on their way to bank, because of people paying such prices...

Pretty easy to see if any boards you may have are potentially affected, 30 secs with a DMM and a quick check of the cap orientation as a visual confirmation.

Have to say I'd hope that Asus will be footing the bill if any other components are damaged due to this pee poor QA.

But weeks to RMA it knowing ASUS if the retailer washes their hands of it...

Don't understand how that would have got passed any automated visual check, but I'm not in manufacturing.

Has it been powered up? Either way you need to apply for an RMA

Running absolutey fine since Xmas day. Forgot to update BIOS immediately but did - to 0811 - on the 26th.

Definitely want it replacing but am absolutely determined to get a cross ship. Came from that Bolton place so nothing to do with OCUK.

A real pain as well. People will have systems down for many weeks I'd imagine.

Still have my 9900k and z390 Hero - so much for brand loyalty.

Unfortunately I'm watercooled and can't switch back to that without the PITA that is draining and refilling. Guess the simpler option would be to get a bog-standard 1151 air cooler in the meantime.

Was about to post about this, and realised you already mentioned about the backwards capacitor.

Couldn't find a way to delete my post. so edited it

I wouldn’t use it TBH, just in case it takes other components with it

Disaster averted, hopefully. Was dark and difficult to see when I checked last night, but on closer inspection it looks like I'm safe here...

Looks like a completely different component to the ones in the videos. Maybe easier to tell which way round these are?

Yes, yours is on the right so should be OK. Glad you didn't need to go through the hassle of returning it. It will be interesting to see what the fallout of this is and what or if Asus' public statement about it is.
