Hi all,

My current orange contract is up soon.. my question - do I go for the HTC Hero now or wait a couple of months.

Are there any major android releases coming up that are known about?

Wait a couple of months :)

SE Xperia x10 (Rachael) is due around feb, that is supposed to be a kick ass Android phone. Or there could be the Motorola Droid/Milestone (some people don't like Moto tho)

That is a tough call. Get a Hero now or wait till the new year and see what comes out.

Hmmmmmm <rubs chin>

I really don't know what I'd do if it was my choice as the Rachael, and other phones due next year, does look nice.

To be honest i'd get the Hero. It's a fantastic phone and if there's something you want earth-shatteringly more that comes out you can always sell it.

Wait it out! the Hero itself is a nice phone but all the parts inside it are over a year old, HTC have done a damn good job releasing it and managing to bring new life into old tech but seriously the 1Ghz cpu phones and ones with more RAM are slowly coming out. Within a few months you will be kicking yourself why you didnt wait. The good thing about the new phones and the more resources means you have more to play with when your installing custom cooked up roms etc.

WAIT. New Android phones are coming out with better hardware (namely CPU, the Hero is a tad slow for my liking).

It depends how long you will have the hero for. 12 months then get it. Any longer then wait.

ooohh that SE looks bloody awesome!! February 10th tho?? that's a fair wait.... infact right on the borderline of how long i could wait for!

what's the thoughts on this unit?

I think if you can find a 12 month contract it would be worth getting the hero. I got one afew months ago and its the best phone i've ever had, but seeing all the new ones coming out soon... its harsh but always the same.

You guys are misplacing computer specs with phone specs. A faster processor doesn't necessarily mean a faster phone. Sure, there are 1GHz CPUs coming out, but one of the largest speed-deciding factors is how well the software is designed to make use of it. Since they're completely new, and Android isn't the most 'experienced' OS then it's doubtful that the operational speed would increase.

Besides - IT'S A FREEGING PHONE. In all seriousness, there's no need for a phone with a spec that would blow away a ten year old top of the range. If you look at what it's actually doing then the resource usage will most likely be less - and in 1999 a top of the range would have been blisteringly fast. No way do you need more than that.

What next - a phone with an Atom in it?

I was in the same position last month, and decided to get a Hero.

I know it'll tide me over just fine until next summer, when I'll be offered another upgrade.

I know there is loads of Hero vids on youtube, but is there any in particular you guys feel demonstrate the speed and flexibility of the Sense UI on Hero?

The power / flexibility is actually provided by Android.

The Sense UI just jazzes it up a bit.
