Sorry Fox but none of the above is true as far as I can see.

Then perhaps you are blind, or don't live in the UK. And given this is Overclockers *UK*...

Pre-recession petrol was at 1.35 here it's now at 1.40.

In July 2008, a litre of unleaded petrol was GBP1.20. In January 2009, it hit a low of GBP0.82. It is now GBP1.07.

Flights to america July 2008 were under 400€ this July we couldn't go as flights were 750€

I paid GBP560 for a return ticket from London, UK to Melbourne, Australia in June and July of this year. The year before, these tickets were over GBP1000. After I booked, Singapore Airlines slashed ticket prices still further to a staggering GBP399.

I'm renegotiating my mortage first time since 2003 then I got 4.05 fixed now it's 4.10 fixed again no reduction.

Our interest rate is 0.5%!

Of course these are only FACTS based on real life I'm sure you can drum up some statistics to prove me wrong ;)

I live in the UK. So does everyone else here. It's not my problem if you don't?

Where did your information come from? Line management? Bonuses should be given as a % of your salary - I certainly don't know what mine will be yet.

I had a .ppt listing the dates somewhere...think they're announced on dec 15thish?

As Fox says, for those in work in the UK - it has been possible to ride the storm well. I for one feel extremely fortunate.

The bonuses we are getitng (I don't work for HP, but a similar company), are not of a direct ratio to our salary. It is however a percentage of the incomings, into a pot, split evenly amongst though who attain the correct rating and above during your yearly review.

I didn't mean to say they are a fixed % of salary, just that they will be presented as a %, not a dollar figure to the employee.

It's about bloody time the company got a wake up call. Now, what shall I do on Thursday?

Queue all the "be glad you have a job", "it wont get you anything" naysayers.

HP phoned me up and the conversation went like this:
Recruiter: "Hi I'm <name>. I work for HP and found your CV on <site>. Are you still looking for work?"
Me: "Yes."
Recruiter: "I see that you're a Solution Architect."
Me: "Yes."
Recruiter: "I have a role for Junior Solution Architect <explains role>. Can I ask what you're currently seeking for base salary?"
Me: "~55K"
Recruiter: "Ah, the role offers 30K. Do you know of anyone that would be interested?"
Me: "Not really, those that I know are in the 50-80 with one guy at 130 at the top end for enterprise architect."
Recruiter: "Ok, thanks for your time."

Now to me this says "We want someone todo the role of Solution Architect but be paid a Presales Consultant salary." also it gave me the feeling that HP have some questionable practices (or exceptionally inept) because once employed the "Junior" aspect is likely to be forgotten very quickly..
So that left a bad taste in my mouth..

HP managers have been asked to wait till the W/C 14th December before relaying any info on pay rises or bonuses. So how you know you're getting £600 is quite amusing.

I know there are bonuses available, and pay rises. I guess you just have to be in the right area :)

You must be referring to local management. Ours is in a different country. Info already been released in reviews.

Same as 4/5 years ago, 1000+ is normal for December (family going back, and it's summer there) but it drops to between £500 and £700 at other times, June July was likely the cheapest time you could have gone.

If prices for to £1000+ outside of peak that was the unusual price - now it's just normalised.

Prices now seem at least a few hundred more than a few years ago (althought admittedly I booked long in advance - few hundred quid premium for shorter notice is possibly reasonable).

You can't bet on getting much from HP so anything is good.

I can garuntee as a union rep I wont be getting a penny in bonus payments (if they actually happen - although I've seen a leaked email asking for the bonuses to be expanded and rushed forward in hope of averting the strike - so the industrial acion is already working to an extent.)

I wasn't comparing it with prices for flying right now, but at the same time next year.

Mark Manser, the DWP account executive has just given written assurance that there will be no compulsory redundancies on the DWP account for the current WFR (workforce review) programme - the current WFR runs until July 2010.

He's also confirmed the bonus payments will be announced to people individually on 14th Dec.

It's working................. Now we just need that no CR commitment extended for the whole of 2010 and some movement on pay rises - but we're a third of the way to what we want.

Lets see what next week brings.

Senior UK management have requested a meeting to take place between them and the Union to discuss redundancies and pay with a view, and this is their words, "to find a solution acceptable to both parties".

We're having a members meeting today to discuss whether to delay the strike action whilst these meeting are held.

Fingers crossed!

EDIT: Strike action defferred until 18th Dec to enable talks to take place.

Outcome of talks yesterday:-

1: Guaranteed no compulsory redundancies on the DWP account for the whole of 2010 - Workforce Agreement (WFA) agreed in principle.

2: Pay progression and minimum underpinning pay increase for those on the max of the grade for Image terms members.

3: Pay scales to be published for Standard Terms members and an agreement to rectify any inconsitencies if anyone finds themselves below the min for the garde. Company state they will be receptive of a collective bargaining agreement for Standard Terms members and will not oppose such a submission (we submitted the paper work today).

The members met at the respective sites today and agreed to defer the strike action until 21st Jan to enable further negotiation to take place. Further meeting with management to take place 19th Jan.

IMO it's a very good start - a fair bit or crossing the t's and dotting the i's to go but it's progress. Lets see what the next month brings.

Oh, and I got notification of a $500 bonus this afternoon!

Have a good xmas everyone!

Try working as a Dell service engineer - haven't had a pay raise for 6 years. No bonuses & no expenses. Heavier workload and more grief than ever....

And having to be nice to people who love to tell us how cheap their Dell laptop was while complaining about the Indian call centre staff whose low cost operation helped to keep the cost of their laptop so low in the first place...

When are you starting a campaign with your Union to address the situation?
