HGV drivers blocking both lanes in a merge in turn

We do it because quite frankly we are cleverer than you, we can read, we use common sense and therefore its highly likely our journey is more important than yours. You are probably only going to buy a tabloid newspaper or something whereas we are probably going to an important meeting on faciliation and procurement excercises.

Ah, you see, you have made as many assumptions about me as I have you, should I draw any conclusion form your spelling mistakes ?

Jog on.

I have fond memories of overtaking a queue about 1 mile long on the A1 then being pulled out on by one of those gigantic rubble carrying lorries, who then proceeded to block me all the way to the roadworks......

And another time a similar thing happened as above, but replace lorry with very angry BMW driving moron, who again blocked me from getting through and giving constant hand signals for me to move over into his lane, like I was doing something wrong? :D He was doing this for a long long time, as I found it satisfying to ignore him

I would have got out and advised them on how merge in turn works :p

I wonder if people would get it more if the single lane at the end was in the middle, rather than on a particular side?

You don't even need that. Just have the road sign make it look like a / \ resulting in the traffic not knowing which lane is about to close.

I think they should put up less signs, its not like you need to know a lane is closing 1 mile down the road, just stick one 100 yards before and make sure theres plenty of big signs and flashing lights on the lane closure. Then people won't think they have to sit in one lane until its too late.

Ah, this old chestnut again :p

I love it when this happens to me, particularly if a lorry has done it to me right from the 800 metre warning sign. As soon as the roadworks have finished, I get in front of the lorry and drive just that bit too slow for him. I have loads of patience in this respect and can annoy him for miles and miles. About 50 mph is great!

I know it's childish, but I really think commercial drivers should know what merge in turn means and not take it upon themselves to apply their own rules.

It;s stupid, one truck did this and I squeezed past him nicely,

Another tried this, so I undertook him instead, they really are fools.

I've always wanted to be behind someone who does this, just so I can move up and steal their place in the queue. And then not let the ****er in.

Depends if there are two queuing lanes set up. I think this is where your analogy becomes useless :p

Damn. Ok....two queues at two tills, one closes. Merge in turn or just moan a bit and join the back of the other queue ;)

I'm not saying merge in turn is a bad thing BTW! However, the majority of merges are not signed as such (IME), and this is where I suspect the trouble occurs. If it doesn't say "merge in turn" and people try it then (rightly or wrongly) tempers get frayed. More "Merge in turn" signs needed.

What a shocker, the force your way in at the last second merge in turn routine being justified by the BMW sig self obsessive **** with no regard for the time others have spent queuing in a sensible and ordered manor.

No wonder BMW drivers have bad reps for being complete scum of the earth.

Are you really that ignorant that you refuse to admit that WE (the BMW massive) are in the right here, and everyone else just seems to have a problem comprehending the highway code?

Try reading it.

If I do it in my SEAT Leon is that OK?

Making one long queue when there are two lanes is not sensible.

Queuing in an orderly fashion across both lanes to maxmise the use of space and taking turns to pass through to the single lane is sensible. If EVERYONE used the shortest lane as they arrived, then each would minimise their wait time to the shortest possible.

Is it sensible to be petty and take an attitude that "I'm not doing that so why should they"?

There shouldn't be one long queue in the first place.

DISCLAIMER - Read this re slow moving traffic. If this occurs in fast traffic, it should be approached as any other road, keeping left and only overtaking if you can move back safely - treating the merge as oncoming traffic for example.

Highway Code said:
You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed

Great, and where have I said that I will drive up to said merge at 100mph and then proceed to cut up the next in line?

I do it correctly, when it is perfectly safe and sensible to do so.

People, people! Stop explaining Merge in Turn to others. If everyone starts driving properly the rest of us won't be able to drive past miles and miles of idiots who don't understand.
