HGV drivers blocking both lanes in a merge in turn

I did a picture version :p

Left: How typical British morons feel the need to queue
Right: How the queue should be formed if the average driver had half a brain

I wonder if people would get it more if the single lane at the end was in the middle, rather than on a particular side?

Your picture is crap IMO because the one on the left would have the traffic moving faster because hardly anyone needs to be allowed to merge in, therefore can keep moving at a more steady pace. Before you say it I understand merge in turn but I also would want to keep moving as much as possible.

Great, and where have I said that I will drive up to said merge at 100mph and then proceed to cut up the next in line?

Look at the word I emphasised in bold...

I'm just playing devils advocate; the point is it's not currently a mandatory behaviour (as I believe it is in other countries?) merely a recommended one.

If traffic is moving freely yes, but then you wouldn't need merge in turn in that case. If it's queued back, then it's because the flow in the single lane bit is the constraint so it doesn't make any difference whether you merge or turn or just have one huge queue.

On one hand i feel dismay that people don't understand the logic.
On the other i'm happy as it means i get home more quickly.

Exactly, its just the merge in turn is a better utilisation of road space if there is a hold up.

I've seen car drivers do it plenty of times. It is pretty annoying to see every prat who thinks his journey is more important go haring past and then trying to get in further up.
You mean people doing it right?

What about those moronic ****** that drive right up to the roadworks even if there is a solid line of cars to their left hand side yet still feel it nescessary to force their way in at the very end

I honestly don't get this, just queue in all lanes then merge taking turns when the lanes merge.

Don't try to stop people merging all the way down the end, if you do; you're wrong and you're a penis.

Don't stop and try to merge 400 yards before the lane ends, suppress your cringe gland and drive right to the end, you'd be right to do so.

When I run all the way down the end of a bad queue like this I'm saving like 5 or 10 minutes, why do all you people thing you need to queue on the left like that? I bet you paid list/asking price for your car too.

I've actually had someone swerve out into my path as I was going down the empty lane causing me to go onto the hard shoulder to miss him. The set of road works also had about 5 please merge in turn signs around 1/2 a mile from the actual start of the road works.
I think it's actually been proven using merge in turn correctly means you WILL filter through quicker - not that I mind people queueing in the same lane as it makes my journey quicker. :)

I really think that the Govt should run an advertisement campaign to educate the general public on this issue so that merge in turn can be used effectively.
The Nanny State run campaigns for everything else under the sun, might as well do this one as well.

If everyone just chilled the eff out a little, it wouldn't really be a problem, would it? Take your roadrage elsewhere.

I understand the concept, but generally I like to merge around 150-200ish yards prior to the lane closure as if the left lane is still moving 20-30mph then its just safer and not worth the risk if the left lane doesnt let you filter and you run out of road. What irritates me is people who then speed up, pass me and attempt to just filter in and cause everyone to concertina break when they had plenty of time to filter at similar speeds as the flowing, but slightly slower left lane.

Whats even more irritating is those who just completely stop and filter as soon as they see the sign, like 600-800 yards out!

I love it when this comes up, its like the air plane on a conveyor belt thing :D

I still won't let you in, the A23 merges from 3 into 2 and that is permanent yet is a constant source of accidents due to numpties "merging" right at the last moment into a gap that isn't there at speed. I'd question the reason for anyone doing it, bet it has little to do with the highway code.

the accident is the fault of the numpty in lane 2, getting all irate about "queue jumpers" and not creating a gap for the car in lane 3 to move into.

Instead they close the gap, get all territorial and refuse to let them in.

Its them that cause the accidents, not the people following the highway code.

Had this exact problem on the A4 one night coming back from football. Merge in turn signs up due to roadworks, fair enough keep travelling along. Queue starts to form in right hand lane, carry on driving. No one else in the left lane, drive to the obstruction, turns out its 6 tar-mac lorries, merge, get passed and move on.

All the numpties in the "queuing" lane created a tail-back across junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights for 40 metres of obstruction. Says it all really, driving standards are just way down, as can be seen by MLM and people revving the nuts of their cars in the snow/ice.
