Hello,

After various questions etc on here, im now looking at a fully custom PC which id like to be built for me, preferably OCUK. Anyway, yes ive seen their pre-built system and used the configurator, but it dosent seem to have the absolute best bits... so what I want and need to do is get an actual price for a full system inc. monitor so when im away I can compare the laptop/desktop in spec and price and finally decide what way to place my hat.

Anyway let me name some of the components id definately want in there:

i7 CPU - now I see the 990X is the most expensive (and thats what the laptop will have) however I want the thing OC'd so if that Sandybridge thing is better, please use that.

RAM - 8gb of the fastest and OC'able stuff. (If 16GB is better use that, but again I want the thing clocked to run at max)

GPU - 2 X 580s in SLI - i dont know which make is better, but again the fastest and most OC'able pair.

27" Monitor, best for gaming in quality and response.

HDD - 240Gb SSD as a primary drive, again fastest and best. 2nd to be the fastest non SSD storage drive, 500Gb or more.

Sound - Best sound card for use with headphones and gaming.

Other stuff I havent a clue what fits with what, so go crazy on case, mobo, cooler, a DVDRW is fine not interested in blu ray films, PSU, id like a memory card reader included if possible, wifi, wired keyboard, gaming mouse (wired), best gaming headset... err think thats it. Oh and a cpoy of Windows 7, the one that can read all the RAM correctly.

Apologies i cant be over specific and that im asking for help on this, I have put things in a basket to get an idea, but I never know what card works with what mobo and what allows overclocking etc, which cooling I need ... so cap in hand, i come for help.

Budget - lets say £4000 inc vat, built, OC'd and delivered (i know you cant quote for the build part, but leave some spare of the 4k for that) :D

iirc, i7s only use triple channel rams, im not sure if this is still the case for SB i7s, wait for more exp. people to clarify that.

if this system is going to be used for gaming, and gaming only i would save some money and get a i5 2500k setup instead.

i know you would like the PC built + OC'd for you, but it will be far cheaper (20% cheaper at least) to build it yourself. it is very easy to build and overclock yourself, especially with this forum available to support you all the way. if you arent happy to build it yourself then thats fine, but it will cost a lot

the sandybridge processors are fastest available. dont waste your money on a 990X in anything. just look at this comparison between the two. the sandybridge will be a far better overclocker too:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/142?vs=287

the main question i have is, will you be doing anything other than gaming that will be processor intensive? (ie video creation, massive photoshop work, etc)
this will change what i recommend for you eg, i will recommend an i5 2500k over an i7 2600k as they perform exactly the same in games): http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=287

i can also tell you that no matter what laptop you find, it will be nowhere near as good as a desktop.

my last question is, are you interested in 3D gaming, using three monitors for one game (eyefinity), or both (nvidia 3D surround vision)?

*edit*

its late, so no. what have i missed this time

*braces for unbelievably stupid mistake being pointed out in front of everyone*

*edit*
oh... now i see it. however, this wasnt a mistake - the OP is clearly an octopus, so could easily make use of the second keyboard :p

i think this calls for super facepalm:

Thats just a small error, even I have done silly little things like click the button twice.

Instead,

The monitor/s is no way compatible with Nvidia 3D surround vision.

@the OP.

This is what I would do,

So thats everything apart from a gaming headset as I dont know whats good or not.

The case is very nice,

gtx570 in sli offer all the power you could want, while saving a small fortune over gtx580's
http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-570-sli-review/1

a high quality mechanical keyboard and a excellent mouse.

and of course the amazing dell 27" ips screen

So that leaves about £1.5K for new tech thats released in the future keeping your PC at the cutting edge.

really, it says it does 3D, and i thought any monitor that ran at 120Hz would work

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/monitors/display/samsung-sa950_4.html#sect0

The SyncMaster SA950 comes with a pair of active shutter glasses. The shutters block the viewer’s eyes alternately, like with Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology, but neither the monitor nor the glasses are compatible with 3D Vision.

And isnt 3D vision a bit of a gimmick that wears off rather quickly, can make some people sick.

To the op,
Here is what i would do.

I didn't select a sound card because onboard sound is great on today's mother boards.
Not only that but the razer megalodon's i picked are gold plated usb
The main reason for picking this headset is not because of the 7.1 surround but because they are extremely comfortable to wear.

So out of the 4k budget it leaves £1333 out of this £20 for the overclock and however much it will cost to have it built for you.

Dell U2711 has high input lag sadly, best going for a Hazro model as all 27-30 inch models have very low input lag for IPS panels.(HP ZR30w is good too)

Why? the image quality have been good....connectivity is very limited however but problem is Hazro have a bad returns pixel policy which i disagree with and to be honest i would go for a HP ZR30w over any 30 inch monitor for gaming.

The amount of people in this thread saying they are sending it back is alarmingly high - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18277033 - or it might have been this one - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18204986&highlight=hazro - or this one - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18258861&highlight=hazro

But I certainly remember a lt of people moaning and sending them back.

Never seen anything about high input lag mentioned about the Dell causing any issue, infact these people seem to think it rocks - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18291206

Yeah i seen that thread, the ones who hadn't returned and got lucky seemed to of liked them though. The input lag will not be much of an issue unless the person is playing fps games mainly online where it can be a pain if they are a competitive player which are fairly common on here i think.

The U2711 is a good monitor do not get me wrong but i would pay the extra and go for a HP ZR30w if a high end 2k+ rig.

I just want 3d 120hz IPS panels to hurry the hell up. :(
