High performance router for VM?

Hi guys,

Basically I need to upgrade from my crappy dir615 that VM gave my family when we got 50mb broadband.

In my house we have 2 PC's that use heavy traffic, 1 xbox, 1 ipad and 2 laptops that connect to my router.

I have looked around and it looks like the linksys e4200 is a decent router that provides fast speeds and good signal quality even at long distances.

But the problem is the price, is there any other router that provides roughly the same performance but a better price? I need bang for buck.

I heard that all the 50MB users are going to be upgraded to 100MB free of charge by VM so I need a router that will be able to cope with the speed, bandwidth and all the devices with good signal quality.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I have VM and I'm holding out for Asus rt-n66u. The current rt-n56u was suposed to be a great performer. I'm hoping the 66 is an improvement at a similar-ish price. I expect it to be over the £100 mark on release though.

I bought a tplink wr1043 for £40 (N and gigabit switch) then stuck ddwrt on it, perfect. It also runs openwrt if you prefer.

You just cannot beat that for bang for buck.

I'm also looking out for a router to replace the crappy VM hub thing.

That TP-Link looks pretty good for the price... it's between it and the Asus RT-N16 for me I think!

First of all just stick dd-wrt onto your existing router and see if that makes a difference before you go spending any money

see what router version you have as I don't know.

Already got that on there. Did not make much of a difference, I dont have to reboot it as much thats about it, before I had to reboot every few days.

I just need a new router mate trust me lol.

I dont want to have to put it on the next router, Dont have the time anymore to be messing with it just need somthing that works and is quick.

Seems to me like its between the N56 or wait for the N66, what do you reckon?

I realise they are a bit more expensive, but have you considered the Apple Airport Extreme? I have 2 of them now, at uni and at home and I have never had to reboot them once. Never going back to those rubbish Netgears now!

I have the 56, it's by far the best router I have ever owned, stable (never had to reset it once so far) and fast (I get excellent wirless signal) and full of features. Mind you, I guess I would have been blown away with anything after using the superhub for ~6 long months. Look out for deals on the 56, I think I got mine for £80 on OCUK. Btw, I can't find it right now but I read somewhere the 66 will be more like £150, but don't take that as gospal. Lastly, the 66 is a bit of an ugly 3 horned beast, the 56 is suprisingly small and very neat.

Personally I love my two Linksys E3000's. One of them is set up with a mini build of dd-wrt and can act as a great router, simultaneous 5GHz/2.4GHz wifi with great coverage, and has great customization options. The 2nd router is running a mega build of DD-WRT which allows access to a ton more software options that can run on the router. WAN to LAN throughput is easily sufficient for what VM currently offer, and plan to offer in the near future.

I have a dual band linksys 610N and VM 50Mb - have no complaints, it is superb.
I have no idea where it fits in compared to their current range though...
