Hiking, backpacking, trekking, mountaineering...

Anyone ever owned or tried on any AKU boots? SportsPursuit have some good deals on and looking at their sizing, seems they run large. Postage and returns aren't free so could get expensive trying them on, doesn't look like there's a lot of info online on how they fit.

You should always try boots on. Feet are very different and even from the same manufacturer they can be totally different. I've spent £300 on scarpa manta pros that wrecked my heels with blisters on the first <5mile outing even after proper fitting, because I ignored a little heel slip and was between sizes. Lucky it was in snow so I just took them back. I actually wanted to persevere and tried different lacing techniques and superfeet in the shop but wasn't confident it would eliminate the heel slipping so returned.

It's always worth going down to a shop and getting fitted properly, especially if you hike. Remove the inner and stand on it - you want about a thumbs width extra to allow for your feet to swell when you walk

This - 100%

I know what boots I favour - Zamberlans (https://en.zamberlan.com/mens-hiking-shoes.html) - I have had three pairs over the years - my favoured boot is no longer available and has been replaced with something new.

I know that I could get the same boot cheaper online but I ALWAYS get checked out and fitted with what seems the best fit from the same shop in the French Alps when on holiday and wear them around the accommodation for a week to make sure they are right.

Amy recommendations for outdoors related YouTube channels, guys? Anything from gear reviews to chill channels where people just document cool hikes they've been on? Of the latter type, Kraig Adams is one you might like - minimal talking, relaxing music, beautiful scenery.

I watch a few like Scotland's Mountains (mainly documenting the guy's walks and wild camping in Scotland), Hounds of Howgate (not posted recently, but fun series of videos doing long distance walks in Scotland with his dog), and Mary Mansfield (started watching when she did the PCT last year, posts the odd gear review and walk video now).

Cheers! I'll check them out.

Beau Miles is one of my favourites. Running, kayaking and outdoor DIY mashup so not really hiking related but still great. He's got a bunch of vids expected over the next few months, trailers have been on his channel for years (literally!)

Geowizard particularly for the "straight line" challenges

I was just about to post about Beau Miles

His marathon over 24 hours was a great video.

Just thought I'd throw up a quick recommendation on some cheap walking pants that I took a punt on a year ago, that I've been using while dog walking, should anyone be in the market for some :-

LHHMZ Men's Outdoor Hiking Trousers (01 Fleece Black) : https://www.amazon.co.uk/LHHMZ-Trousers-Windproof-Breathable-Comfortable/dp/B08FBXBNYV/ref=sr_1_9?dchild=1&keywords=walking+pants&qid=1608047659&sr=8-9&th=1

Pros : Sizing about right I'd say on both waist and legs, elastic waist but with a belt, stretchy, good in showers, light, warm due to the inbuilt fleece, cheap (£25 at the time I think), surprisingly durable it would seem after about 15 washes (5 or so with Nikwax) and about 150 hose downs. Pockets have held up well to having some loose change, keys and a phone in them half the time too.

Cons : Not completely waterproof like they say (no real shock there at the price). If you're caught out in the open and it really pees down for say 15 or more minutes then expect to get wet legs. I would put them near the top end of shower proof though as light and medium rain really does fly off them.

My legs don't seem to sweat (my top half makes up for this) so can't really comment as to whether they are breathable to any great degree at all. They'd be too warm for summer though. No change in shape or feel after all the washes, water and about 250 dog walks now and they'd had quite a bit thrown at them too, including various dog's claws and branches trying to spike me through them.

Apart from some shorts on hot days and it completely peeing down on occasion I've used these constantly and have been happily surprised by them.

So I know I'm thinking well ahead here with current lockdown, but want to start doing some wild camping this year as seen quite a few excellent spots during my hiking and climbs.

How much am I looking at spending on a tent for something that's decent but doesn't break the bank?

Vango Banshee 200. All you need unless you aim to wild camp in terrible weather.

Excellent timing. Just looking for some soft shell pants and these are a third of the price (at least) compared to the others I'd been looking at. Will taka a punt also. ;)

Great service from Osprey Europe, bought a bag a while back from their secondlife shop, and its been great but noticed before Christmas that it should have had a shoulder strap couldn't find one anywhere to purchase or on their website. Filled out a quick contact form asking if I could purchase one and 4 days later Mr Postman delivered one sent free of charge, turns out the message ended up in my junk folder but never mind.

Well I took a punt and for £30 can't fault them, so bough another pair! :D
