Hiper PSU's

My 580W lasted for years, now its moved onto another owner that is proberbly still using it now fine.

Seems the Corsair 520W's are going a lot now, wont be surprised if there is a Corsair explosive club soon...

your getting me all worried.....i dont want to lose all my data, or anything, as its my first build ive ever done!

You'll 'probably' be fine, I'm just talking about the 'beginning of the Endtimes' and being all apocalyptic ...because I'm technically a crazy person and shouldn't be allowed near anything with a sharp edge, the capability to crush flesh and bone or anything with explosive potential. ;)

Were did you get this info from?
Everyone said this about the original ones too, they even had good reviews

JonnyGuru seems rather impressed with the 880w units that he tested and CWT are the OEM (solid rather than brilliant normally but here they appear to have excelled). The problem is that Hyper aren't all bad but they attracted a poor reputation after a bad spell and that is a lot harder to shake than a good reputation.

azab350, you need to sort your signature as it is way oversized.

//edit ah, James posted the JonnyGuru review as I was looking it out.

well my rig was build for gaming, after loaning some money of aunties and mates, left on 24/7 only now am i starting to turn it off at night, runs sopme hardcore games, like AoC, Crysis, COD4, Requeim, CellFactor

its just im now worried about the bang it might create and whether ill need a new rig or not...

They used to be dirt cheap and were actually capable of powering things without blowing up, that's what made them so popular.
Did they not start using cheaper components after a certain amount of time? Sure I remember someone conducting the classic "PSU weight test" and newer ones being much lighter...

I had a 580w type-r for about a year, it now powers a friends PC, hasn't skipped a beat though and that's it been running from the 6800GS launch. 2.5/3 years?
I would never pay the over inflated prices for one now but at the time it was a good price for a reasonable item.

We've all heard about how people have had unreliable experiences with certain companies.
But is there anyone with recommendations, ie the best PSUs, that have a great lifetime whatever the load on it. (Or is that being too optimistic? ;))

Sure;

Enermax
Corsair (the HX series are the ones that come in for special praise)
Seasonic
Zalman

The following certainly 'used' to be good, I'm not sure now though, as I've either not used any of their products in years or haven't heard/read much about them in recent times.

Tagan
FSP Sparkle
Antec (I had a bad experience with one once, but they are typically pretty solid I believe)

You can't really go wrong with the first 4 brands I listed though. Enermax are my personal favourites, but I can't give you any better reason why, over the other 3, besides the fact that I've used them ever since they were THE enthusiast power supplies to have, and I've never had one miss a beat on me. The Corsair HX's are just as good now.

I certainly wouldnt trust it with a GTX 280 but thats just me.

Best psu's i would say any of the following:

Corsair Hx
Seasonic
Enermax
OCZ
PC&C

Antec & Tagan used to be good psu's too

ok to power my sig-rig, with a TV card, and GTX 260, and a decent Phenom QC what would i NEED?

The hiper will probably power that but could be hit or miss, it may last a few years until a further upgrade or go duff like many others within months.

Pritty much any psu from the above lists but it all depends on budget really.

i would happily go with a Q6600, but ive just shelled out for this rig! and dont really fancie yet another mobo installation, there horible!

Had a Hiper 580Watt Type-M (the non-modular version) and it ran perfectly well for around 18 months before I sold it on. And that had some abuse in the weight placed on it - ran a Pentium D 805 at 3.8Ghz (almost 200 watts there alone!), 2 GB Ram and a pair of rev1 X1900GTs in crossfire.

Now run a Silverstone 600watt, and its run a Q6600 @ 3.6, 4GB Ram, 8800GTX, 5 HD's and 2 Optical drives all with no issue. Love it - quiet and very very stable.

Moeks

Not wish to disrespect you but...

Not quite sure I'd agree with putting Tagan in the "used to be good" category.

As far as I'm aware, they are a relatively new company (founded 2001/2 I think) and I was under the impression that their products had improved over the years.

I can only speak from my own personal point of view. And I think the current BZ series are a step up from the previous modular ones (and I've had both). The reviews on the whole seem more favourable. Though I have seen one comment about that secondary capacitors and the tester was a little concerned that they were not a make he recognised. And into this some people seem to have read that they have "poor build quality". This article then goes on to test the BZ past the point that a lot of PSU's go "pop" (and in the real world, no one will ever get close to this) and it passed with flying colours and gets a recommended award. It certainly swung the sale for me.

Now I'm not saying that no Tagan ever fails, I'm not that much of a "fan boy" but then again, even the premier brands have problems at times.

In the end, you pays your money and takes your chance (pretty much like life in general).

seems to me like just the PSU will conk, and if thats the case, a Thermaltake 1500W will be lowered in via industrial crane into the base of my rig, thus, laying foundations and preventing me moving it for some time....
