Hirsch mapped my Saab 9-3 but a slight issue....

Got the dealer to do the Hirsch Performance Upgrade (basically a manufacturer approved remap) to my Saab 9-3 1.8t (150bhp), taking it to 195bhp.

Can't really complain about the performance, which is amazingly linear in terms of power delivery - doesn't feel like a turbo car at all - but there's a slight issue I've noticed.

When I come off the throttle completely, there is a very slight, almost imperceptible, stutter in the power delivery, as the car goes from 'throttle/fuel/air' to 'no throttle fuel air'.

The same happens when I press the throttle slightly - there's a very, very slight jolt as the power moves from 'nothing' to 'something', before it accelerates smoothly/aggressively.

It's almost like the car is transitioning in/out of stock sleepy mode and in/out of angry aggressive, but not really doing it in a 100% gradual progressive way.

Any way this issue could be cured?

Got the correct NGK spark plugs in it?

Had that issue on my aero very very occasionally, checked and changed the plugs, never happened since.

No idea about the spark plugs as I've only owned the car for 2 days.....

But I didn't notice the slight jerky / stutter issue before the remap. That said, 150bhp was never enough to produce any violent on/off accerlation, and power delivery was quite languid in stock form!

I have a similar issue with my MK5 Golf GTI 2.0T. I think it has to do with the remapping of the turbo. I might be wrong, but because they increase the boost on the turbo when you come off throttle the sudden decrease in boost causes the car to jolt a little. I didn't have my issue before my remap.

2 different cars I know but sounds exactly like what I have experienced on mine too. Might have to do with the dump valve? Although I have had that changed since the original one let go post remap.

Dump valve on these is integrated into the turbo so not something you can easily swap out. Also problems pertaining to the bypass valve are usually lack of boost due to it leaking or it not releasing the pressure properly and causing compressor stall when releasing the throttle. (funny noises are a common sign, like "hooting" and "mooing")

Hirsch maps retain the manufacturer warranty so going see the dealer about it would probably be best. Plugs for these appear to be NGK PFR6T-10G according to the part number and they are the same across all 4 cyl petrol models. Normally these sorts of issues are when a coil is on its way out or there is a damaged/fouled plug. (these have now got individual coils unlike the older models with all 4 in a big module called direct ignition. Always carry a spare in the boot)

Asking the same question on one of the saab forums is likely to get you a more specific response. (like UKSaabs or saabcentral)

My remapped A6 (2.0T FSI) has a similar trait.

The trait's annoying. I'd happily trade some bhp for progressive power delivery. Herky, jerky ain't my thing no matter how fast it is....

Surely, there must be a fix somewhere that doesn't involve fiddling with parameters in the map?

Otherwise, I'm going to have to ask them to put it back into stock form :(

Looking at the VAG forums it seems that it is usually caused by a tight hose somewhere supplying the turbo, which acts as a one way valve (I don't understand it tbh). Might help to check the hoses and the equivalent of the BOV. Some have reported more smoothness with throttle body cleaning and MAF replacement.

Here's an idea way out of left field - why don't you ask the dealer instead of a computer forum?

Linear power delivery?

I had a 2.0t 9-3 vector and it felt laggy compared to the previous bi turbo RS6 i had. I had to mash the pedal on the apex of a turn cos i knew it would be a few seconds before i was making my exit before the power actually came in.

are we saying that when it comes on boost, there is the occassional surge, particularly if youre using part throttle?

Nope I don't think that is what he is saying. The power delivery is fine its when coming off throttle half way up the power band that the car feels like it jolts. As mentioned previously, particularly noticeable on the motorway!

To be fair, most things would seem a little weak coming from an RS6 :)
