guys...

next few weeks will see the release of the 7K320, the successor to the 7k200.

it is 2.5" (obviously) and comes in flavors of up to 250 and even 320gig and of course is 7200rpm...

best of all, its power consumption is on par with the lesser 5400rpm models

i knew holding out for a hdd would be worth it, the 320 gig one is going straight in my macbook ;)

Been looking for a new hard drive for my MacBook might look at these drives if the price is right, I keep running out of space as 80GB is nothing these days.

:) would really like to stick one of these in my MBP, 7200rpm 320gb would be very nice. could really do with the extra speed.

I know replacing the HDD in the macbook these days in easy, how hard is it for the MBP?

Cheers

Pain in the neck. Lots of screws, about 22 of varying sizes if memory serves. Need to remove the top panel with keyboard attached to get at the guts.

Have a look at ifixit.com, they have a walkthrough. It is easier however than changing the drive in an iMac where you need to remove the TFT panel.

does anyone happen to know when the 7K320 will be available? everything i have said just says it is "shipping now" but no shops have it?

I did it, sure there are lots of screws of different sizes but you only need 2 different screwdrivers - a small crosshead and a Torx (T5 I think) if you lay the screws out on the table where they came out its difficult to go wrong. When I did it thought I missed one of the screws in the front of my battery compartment and bent the keyboard panel a little though, hardly noticeable and easily fixable though...

I agree, it took 4 weeks to get hold of my 120gb 7k200 however its definately faster than any other notebook drive ive used and battery life is still as good as it was with a 5400 plain jobbie.

Because it's a single piece aluminium chassis. Laptop HDDs are not considered user upgradeable by Apple, we just struck lucky with the normal MacBook.

£5? :D

The MBP chassis is basically the same as the second revision PowerBook G4 from 2003, so its a 5 year old design.

It wouldn't surprise me that the MBP get as complete refresh to push along the next OS X sales.. but we're a distance away from having the MBP line purely SSDs for example.

Do we have a date for the 7K320 in the UK ? Really looking forward to the upgrade.

Were looking at the end of june for it to be in shops over here at a retail price of around £120 - £140 i would imagine, one of these is so going inside my MBP :) can't wait, Fujitsu also have a 320gb 7200rpm drive coming out the end of this month to, will be interesting to see how the two compare.
