Hive

I'm still enjoying my hive..

I only use it for the heating aspect of it, but still. (My boiler didn't have any controls what-so-ever when I moved in, literally just a On/Off switch on the front of it (no thermostat or the like).

Engineer is scheduled to come on Saturday now, thankfully my internet is now back up and running. fingers crossed should go smoothly. will be using it to control heating and water. Plan to use it with my phone as well as with Echo dot.

I've been enjoying my Hive for the past two years - wanted to upgrade the thermostat to the newer one but can't really justify it at the moment, plus it just works fine as it is.
I'd like to get lights/switches(plugs) too at some point in the future...

We moved into our house in December and it has a hive thermostat but for the life of me I cant find the receiver any where? Is it likely to be under the cover of the boiler, its a combi.
We don't use hive through our router or through the mobile app we just set a weekly schedule on the thermostat and that's suits us fine.

But for some reason over the past 2 weeks the thermostat has lost connection with the receiver. the thermostat becomes unusable and "no rf" shows on the screen.
when this happens we still get hot water but are unable to turn the heating on. The heating doesn't come on automatically either.

I've done a search for why this is happening and haven't come up with much. Does any one know the reason and how to stop it form happening again?

Another thing to go wrong surely.. Lived without it for decades so not sure the need for it now.. Not at £200.. Why does everything, including the door bell, need to be hooked up to the net? #old

I am with you old boy.

Seems like a really rather expensive way of paying various corporations/Government to monitor your life.

(And no doubt in the not too distant future, Control and regulate it too)

Its an old one, but a good one!

It's not expensive though, how much would a decent new thermostat and programmer cost? And I don't really have a problem with corporations/Government monitoring my energy usage, since when has that never happened. I take it you are wired directly into the electricity mains and gas without a meter or are self sufficient?

Technically it should help you to better control your heating/hot water, effectively costing you less in the long term (theoretically). Also, automation, and remote activation is pretty useful.

The old honeywell timers/thermostat work well enough, but if you're in a position of doing some work on your CH or boiler, why wouldn't you add an improved way of controlling your heating?

As for the whole government snooping thing - well, if you're that bothered, don't vote, have a mortgage, or a bank account, or a passport and go and live in a mud hut in the fields... Seriously, does it even matter? We enjoy internet, largely uncensored press and freedom in the UK, and you're worried that the government or others snooping. I hope you don't use google, a mobile phone, or sat nav or facebook on your phone... ;)

So what I'm saying is, remove the tin foil hat, and just enjoy the benefits that using this technology unlocks.

When we next do work on our boiler/central heating I will be installing Hive. I prefer it to Nest but that's personal taste.

Such a myopic point of view.

What is the thing on TV I see every night that basically says I could save sooo much money on my heating using Hive with my Phone (Which I do not have, so that is another expense) for only £10/Month.

My Gas bill is only £40/month anway

I would be having to cut it by 30% to break even, and that is before I spent any money on the actual hardware!

How does this make sense??

I've not seen the advert, but it's pretty obvious how it can save money for some people if it turns the heating off and then back on again when they are on their way back home. My house has someone in in pretty much 24/7 at the moment so I probably don't see much saving. But it was a decent upgrade from the old thermostat and timer (which both needed replacing) and integrates well with my Amazon Echos. I paid about £150 for the Hive including fitting. It's nice to be able to 'boost' hot water (turn it on for an hour) if I want a bath or shower and I'm on my way back from somewhere or in bed.

I could understand the hate if it cost thousands, but it's a great device with many advantages for a lot of people.

I have seen the advert and would not pay monthly for it. I bought mine outright on special offer. Think it was £75 installed, the older white unit. I think it does save a bit, for some reason being on my phone I seem to remember to turn the heating off when I leave the house for short trips out compared to leaving it on Auto.

But no that £10 a month does not make sense to me. If it had free upgrades to the new unit each year that would be different.....

Yep, Hive was already fitted to my most recent house purchase and I've been a fan of it ever since. As others have said I wouldn't do the pay monthly but the convenience it offers is certainly nice to have.

just went for this as Prime day have it on offer

when for some extras like multizone, bulbs, sensors etc

i bought the heating and water package even though i have a combi, i guess i don't need to have the water part connected up?
