Technically it should help you to better control your heating/hot water, effectively costing you less in the long term (theoretically). Also, automation, and remote activation is pretty useful.
The old honeywell timers/thermostat work well enough, but if you're in a position of doing some work on your CH or boiler, why wouldn't you add an improved way of controlling your heating?
As for the whole government snooping thing - well, if you're that bothered, don't vote, have a mortgage, or a bank account, or a passport and go and live in a mud hut in the fields... Seriously, does it even matter? We enjoy internet, largely uncensored press and freedom in the UK, and you're worried that the government or others snooping. I hope you don't use google, a mobile phone, or sat nav or facebook on your phone...
So what I'm saying is, remove the tin foil hat, and just enjoy the benefits that using this technology unlocks.
When we next do work on our boiler/central heating I will be installing Hive. I prefer it to Nest but that's personal taste.
Another thing to go wrong surely.. Lived without it for decades so not sure the need for it now.. Not at £200.. Why does everything, including the door bell, need to be hooked up to the net? #old
Such a myopic point of view.
