Hoarding

Problem is sometimes all those little jobs can interleave - just moving one thing can have consequences for a whole host of other things - and/or you can't shake the thought as to what approach is better for the bigger picture and then it can become overwhelming.

One of the first things to do is to categorise stuff but often the only real option is being able to just move everything temporarily categorising as you go - even if that is between chuck, maybe chuck and keep, then sort it as you put it back which obviously requires the extra space temporarily.

All those problems and jobs go away if you chuck it all.

All these tactics are just persisting the problem not fixing it.

I have a system which I exercised recently for my house move.

I’m allowed one single big box of stuff which I’m allowed to keep that has no use. My old rugby kits from teams I played for round the world. All my gig tickets, festival wristbands. A few other random bits of clothing.

Outside that one box, if it doesn’t get used in a year it gets sold, given to charity shop, or binned.

I hear ya but a lot of my hoarded stuff is actually quite valuable that sells for loads on places like ebay but it would be quite labor intensive to take photos off all the things, then list them all and the rest of it, plus more, there is always more... I've also got tons of 70s/80s Stars Wars figures & accessories, stacks of CB Radios with SSB they now sell for 150 per radio, those have become very collectable 80s HeMan figures I will put some stuff online but most I'm just going to give away. I've also got way too many tools, my tool cupboard is over flowing, each time I need a tool I've got to pull everything out to get to the tools I need, lots of containers full of screws and bolts, bags full of mains plugs another cupboard to tackle once I've cleared out more junk.

I said the vast majority. I'm sure someone has a collection of rare Rolex watches in a tin the attic.

If the collection is in boxes not being displayed or tools that inaccessible that's not a collection. That's just storage.

A horde that's worth a lot of money is worth nothing to you. If it's only sold after your gone.

I've two ladders. I've not been on a ladder in 20yrs. I've an unused roof box. I've no roof rack to use it. At some point you have admit you're not using something and unlikely ever to use it.

When it comes to tools I realised I'd inherited a lot of end of life tools. If be better buying better new tools if I ever got around to those jobs rather than storing something worn out for a decade.

I had to set some similar ground rules for myself.

Found the OP.

When he realised his school kept a Henry for each cleaner, Ted began asking to help tidy up.

"The school saw this as an opportunity to teach life skills to the children and provided Ted with his own for incentive," said his mother, Lisa.

"Being well-behaved and completing schoolwork results in vacuum time at the end of the school day.

... opportunity for child labour more like :D

Apologies for the long wait for the photos I've been so busy with things... here are some of them, I couldn't stack all of them to get them in shot so I've done a few photos.

You've made an old man very happy, do you ever turn them all on at once? just for sucks and giggles? I spot the odd spec of dust here and there, @mrk would probably be having a mild seizure!
I haven't done that I'd be worried about blowing the fuse box, drawing too many amps having them all on at the same time. I'm giving that room a good scrub down I've at least cleared out most of the junk in that room.

The utter filth in this picture!

9 guys, 3 gender neutrals, and one girl. The depravity and imbalance of the orgy. And only two of the guys have their game face on .

I don't think any of them get used looking at all the dust on under the chair on one of the pics lol

I was pleased when the girls' weekend away became a full week. Time for a skip to arrive, get filled and disappear again. Might repeat next summer.

literally just done the same thing - wife and daughter away for a week holiday...

Just cleared 5 black bags of junk and some other stuff
