I tried a refurbished fire 7 and it was SHOCKING. I think the refurbed model had a hardware fault too as even the stock kindle OS ran like a sluggish slug...

Tbh it's put be off stumping up money to try again.

Which year model was that as some of the older ones are really slow?

Even the new 7's which are quad core are much slower than the octa core HD 10.

The fire 7's are not good. Fire 8 or 10 are fine as a dashboard. Fire 10 will be better than the 8.

What are you using the tablets for? Can't imagine a use case just yet - have phone, Alexa etc.

Ours are either wall mounted or on stands and show certain parts of our CCTV within our dashboard and do AI motion announcements, as well as general automation info and controls.

Even without the CCTV it's good to have these on display so we can see important sensors when walking by (traffic light colours for status), energy use, garage door open warning (faces road) and to control external lighting. Our various external lights are mostly activated by CCTV AI but it's a quick way to switch groups of them on permanently or turn them off instantly once inside.

The tablets are in kiosk mode and wake on motion or sound so they're very convenient but doesn't waste power and although I use some HA voice activation just tapping a screen controlling certain things is so simple.

I like the idea of the traffic lights for warning! Thanks. Struggling to picture a place now.

Not to be smug but I already had a spot in the hallway planned when we started rewiring. Also happens to be the very centre of the house (1st floor of townhouse) so the wireless AP should go there. I've run 2 cat6 cables to this spot, one will deliver power for a tablet :)

Got to offer guests a way to work the house!

Something I've been toying with for a while, but really need to get off my arse and see if I can get it working - different coloured lights depending on which recycling bin needs to go out.

Our recycling collection alternates, blue bin one week, red the next. Collection day is Tuesday. I'd like an LED strip to power on some time on Monday afternoon and be either red, or blue. I've got a Govee LED strip setup in HomeAssistant with the appropriate scripts and automations to set the colour of the strip. I've already setup Waste Collection Schedule so I have a calendar that knows which bin needs to go out.

The missing piece is setting the light to come up, with the right colour and the right time.

Annoyingly my overnight charge on Givenergy batteries didn't trigger last night, possibly set up some conflicting Octopus Schedules that stopped it activating, although it did take advantage of the extra sessions this morning at 05:30 oddly, so running on a short charge today

Haha yeah I still have plenty of opportunity to do this, but no logical place ATM. The joys of a 1930s layout where dad drank beer in the living, and mum was closed off in the galley kitchen making dinner. The hall is just a waste space to connect the rooms and not integral to the flow of the house if that makes sense.

In the kitchen I have the Alexa Show 5", no obvious spots for a dashboard but perhaps something mini may suit somewhere.

Before doing a proper wall fixing we tried several locations just using an adjustable stand and 90 degree power supply or just some temporary wall sticky fixings to get an idea of what worked for us.

Even though our down stairs hall is central it still didn't seem the best place and although we've gone overboard with three now, only one is wall mounted as we found it better to have a kitchen one lower under a cabinet (can be folded out of view) and our lounge one is on one of the side tables so its within reach when watching TV. It's only in the upstairs hall where wall mounting worked best.
