Home CCTV advice

Hello....My Dads possibly after a CCTV unit...but we have no clue about these.....we'd like a range of around 10-20 meters (pointing straight down a drive...Day/night use and to be able to hook it up either via laptop or some other recording device thats easy to use.....Unfortunatly have no idea on which or what equipment we would need...If anyone has a few minutes to spare and would be willing to write up the parts we'd need to get going it would be greatly appreciated. Price......anything up to £100 max.

Many thanks :)

Not forgotten this, been doing quotes for a couple of new customers, don't forget this is how i pay the rent!

SB118 (or anyone else) would you have any knowledge/experience of the following two PCI cards:-

RapidOS Windows based CCTV PCI card 25fps 4CH
Xvision Advanced 4 Camera PCI Card

I don't know a whole lot about analogue CCTV systems but the security side of the company I work for install loads of IP CCTV systems, I set up the recording servers for them. As people have said the "Nightvision" cameras with a few IR LED's around the outside are a bit pants, motion activated flood lighting is a good (cheaper) choice but if you are looking for "proper" nightvision then you need a day/night camera such as the Axis 221 or Sony SNC-Z20P - both of these cameras weight in at a hefty price (£800) with an included external housing so might not be in your budget but they are the dogs danglies for fixed cameras. If you want a PTZ day/night camera then your looking at ~£1400. You will also need a Infra red flood light which can range from £80-£300 depending on what distance you want the light to shine and what make you get.

On to the software side of things, if you buy an Axis camera they do a free 1-camera version of their Axis Camera Station software. I would highly recommend the free 1-camera version of Milestone XProtect Professional which will support both the Axis and Sony cameras - we install Milestone at work and its a really good product, if you wanted more than one camera then the Basis+ version would do you just fine and is a hell of a lot cheaper than Professional.

As I mentioned above this may be way out of your price bracket but if your interested in any of this you can drop me a email to my trust address and I will happily help you out!

Not heard of either of them. I'll have to catch you one at a time via msn as the best value card i know of is the one i sell with my systems and i don't think Spie would appriciate the intrusion!

Busy night of chat ahead for me!

edit

just found the RapidOS card for £130. Could get 3 of mine that that price! Any more details you'll have to catch me on MSN.

hi SB118, I'm very interested in the CCTV equipment too, keeping the cam indoors, pointing at the driveway.

I dont have anything to add, just wanted to comment that if that really is doable for the kind of money SB118 is talking about, then wow. I need to encorporate this into my upcoming build. Looks excellent.

I have to be careful as this is stuff that i sell myself, but i can't use this site as spie might get the hump.

Its greyed out because you don't have any encoding codecs installed ;)
Try installing the XVid encoder & see where you get from there.
