Hey all,

Recently in neighbourhood theres been a few break-ins etc, and would like to install a couple of cameras asap to atleast deter.

However I cant seem to workout which route to go down, I only need about 3 cameras outside the house to cover my property. I recently bought a server (n40L), and got me thinking of two possible routes:

1. Get a couple of IP cameras and have them save footage to the server(cheapest method - it seems).
2. Get a dedicated DVR to store footage and allow viewing on mobile devices etc.

Any ideas on what route to go down? Theres some fairly cheap kits on auction sites but are they worth anything?

Fake cameras deter just as much as real ones tbh. If someones going to break in they aren't going to be easily recognizable.

this. a nice sized dummy cam and some 'this area is protected by cctv' stickers will deter the chancers, but anyone that is serious about stealing, will know the picture quality on the home systems is so poor it will rarely help with a conviction.

You think? Someone nearby has fake cameras and you can clearly tell they arent connected to anything...

I've never seen them tbh but I know that at night when break ins are most likely to occur knowing a potentially working camera is watching you is the best deterrence par a barking/big dog is the best you're going to get.

It'd cost quite a lot to buy cameras and lighting good enough to be able to use to identify someone.

Do you know the nature of the break ins? Were they your average smash and grab or professional jobs?

If it was the former, a couple of dummies should ward off your friendly neighbourhood crack heads.

Deterrents are a load of crap. Sorry. A few months back when my house was broken into by armed burglars the home CCTV footage proved invaluable to catching accomplices who scoped out the house an hour before the incident.

If you're going to do something then do it right or don't do it at all.

I had mine professionally installed. It isn't a wireless jobbie, but we have a series of high quality infa red cameras with sound which go into a recording box which can be viewed by monitor or mobile device.
