home cinema speakers + PC

Btw what happened to the original DVD player that goes with the speakers? Can you buy it off whoever has it now? Maybe they don't need a DVD player with a built in amp.
basicly my dad bought a new htk kit from a well known high street electronics store as his DVD/amp had blown up and wanted a new one but didnt seek advice first so we just connected up the new amp/dvd player with the old speakers so i have the new speakers free of charge and was just wondering how easy it would be to get them working with an AV amp

that was gonna be my last suggestion. ebay has tonnes of home cinema all in one type amps that you can find for virtually nothing. but if he's happy with these other speakers, thats all that really matters:)

i was thinking of just buying this amp then running the 5 satelites off it then maybee run the sub off the center speaker chanel or buying a another av amp later

Don't do that.

You need a AV Amplifier and another amplifier for the subwoofer, I would look at a cheap stereo integrated amplifer (as you need the pre-amp section to control subwoofer.

edit then use the subwoofer out RCA from that amp above, into the amplifier left or right channel, then speaker cable to the subwoofer.

yeah came up with a new idea a 1 phono to 2 phone leed i could plug the singal phono in the subwoofer port and cut the end offthe 2xphono end and plug it into the woofer which would shorly work

The problem is the level of the signal. The subwoofer out is line level (ie very quiet). Without an amp you wouldn't hear anything from the sub.

Question for all: are there no AV amps that drive the full 6 speakers including the sub? Do they all assume you have an active sub?

Nope. Line level won't drive a speaker driver. You need an amplifier.

Pretty much all AV amplifiers have five channels, a few have more but these are for side speakers. HTIB might have six amps, but usually situted inside the subwoofer. Majority of HT people use active subs, as it's easier and cheaper. However nothing stopping you getting passive subs and external amplifiers (same thing as using AV Pre-amplifiers with external poweramps for all channels)

You could buy a 6.1 amp and plug the sub into the rear centre channel or something. Might sound odd in surround sound though. The best option would be to buy a cheap stereo amp to run the sub from. That sony amp that you're looking at is pretty good, and would be perfectly suited to the task.

yeah but what you guys are saying is that i should buy a stereo amp but its going to sound the same as if i run it off the av reaciver on pne of those speaker chanels as i will have to run the sub off either left or right on either amp

You have a socket labelled "subwoofer". This outputs the sub signal but only at line level. The suggestion is to buy a cheap stereo amp and use it's right or left channel to deliver power to the sub. This will work fine, the sub will output the correct subwoofer channel in films etc.
