I'm getting BT's Infinity fibre service installed today, complete with the new HomeHub 3. I'm assuming that, despite improvements, it's still going to be somewhat sucky as a router.

I've been with BT for ~10 years and I've never had a Home Hub - I had one of the original godawful manta ray USB modems which I swiftly replaced with a Netgear. Since then, I've regularly upgraded my Netgears and I'm dreading the BT kit.

Am I right in thinking that Infinity uses a separate modem that feeds the Home Hub? Their info is pretty sketchy, but the Home Hub certainly seems to be a pure router - http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/wireless-routers/1283386/bt-home-hub-3

If that is the case, would it be worth my while buying another Netgear to replace it with - and does one even exist that will take whatever it is that's going to be pumped down the funky red cable?

Heh, you can tell I'm no network expert :D

I'm with Gammawolf. People complain about HH's all the time but you can nearly always sort it out. Not the best, but certainly not the worst in my experience.

Hmm, for starters, the instructions tell you to enter bthomehub.home into your browser to access the settings. Doesn't work - had to query the network to find out the router's IP and enter THAT into the browser. Not an auspicious start :D (192.168.1.254 by the way.)

My DGN2000 allowed me to run two (or more) access points - one normal WPA2-PSK for most stuff and one WEP that was only switched on when I needed to update the PSP. Can't do that any more :( - a minor niggle I guess.

Nevertheless:

That'll do me :D
