Home Server 2 RC released

Sorry your right, it does work, I'd just missed the manual config through terminal...so the limitations are nil

So there are no limitations on size and number of disks? If that's the case it looks like the best solution even though it doesn't support 64 bit hardware

I've got 3 x 1TB disks in mine at the moment which for me is more than enough, and its running on a 64bit processor its just a 32bit OS but then it is a server OS so its not like its going to use up loads of memory...mine runs happily with 2GB in it

I've been having a play with amahi, its free easy to set up and has an equivalent to drive extender.

I installed it this evening (which seemed to take a very long time). Seems good though, not sure if I can (be arsed) to put it to proper use but I'll have a play :P

Well, after looking about at other possibilities, I have installed WHS RC and am trying it out. My usual backup service, Mozy, is pricey for the essential server backup so I signed up to IDrive which is working well.

I have only got a 500GB drive for the server to use (it has a 320GB drive for itself) and installation seems to be quite easy as well as getting machines connected. I can't use the built-in backup to backup client machines due to lack to disk space but it doesn't seem hard to do. We will be putting some data up in the preconfigured folders and see how things go.

My plan is to get to final release version and put some 2TB disks in to cover the data and client backups. By then I will know well it works. It would be handy to have drive extender but with very large disks managing disk space shouldn't be too hard. You never know, DE might come back in the next version!

I really hope DE does come back as the current limit of 4Gb on WHS is annoying me, I use mine as a VM server as well as everything else.

If it does come back I will install on the day its up for download on Technet :D

I don't yet know how much difference DE is going to make (or rather not having it going to make) With very large disks, 2TB for example, it ought to be possible to keep things on separate disks and not run out of space for a while at least. DE would have been much more help with smaller disks by 2TB Spinpoint disks at less than £70 (on offer at OCUK this week!) I'm not so sure.

Was waiting for "Vail" for quite some time and then they dropped the "DE" bomb.
After a lot of looking I settled on unRAID and couldn't be happier.

unRAID handles all my data storage needs.
I then have Virtualbox running an XP VM on the same machine handling downloads and the like.
Backups are now all handled through Acronis to an unRAID share.

thanks think ill have a play DE to me doesn't matter if you never used it cant miss it

Well I have to say that setting up a server, backup and shared folders was probably never as easy as WHS. I am on the RC of versionn 2 so DE and to date I haven't found problems. Mind, I am only trying it out and not moveing lots of data onto it that I have to move off when installing the real thing.

I only have a 320gb IDE drive on my rig, so I feel a 1tb upgrade coming along, 4gb ram to run XP as a VM also I think.

This sounds impressive, I am currently going through a bad experience with my existing server and I am looking for the future re-placement.

How many people are using unRaid at this time I would really like to know more about this product.

Venares;
Did you have Limetech build your current server or did you build it yourself?
I have never built anything myself but Limetech currently have nothing for sale so the only option is to build.

At first I dismissed it immediately but having read posts on the forum I am definitely warming to idea.

Selfbuild Top.
It honestly is very very easy.
My current server cost me less than £200 + Disk's.

  • AMD Sempron 140 2.70GHz (Socket AM3) Processor
  • Asus M4A78LT-M 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Corsair Builder Series CX 430W ATX Power Supply
  • Silverstone Tech. Precision PS04B Black Mid Tower

I run Virtualbox on there with an XP VM that handles all my downloading.
Then use Acronis True Image Home to backup to one of the network shares.

I can honestly say I don't miss WHS in the slightest.
