Homebrew

I'm currently fermenting my 8% Christmas ale, yummy!

I love brewing, I think the best bit is the DIY involved in improving my kit, I'm currently making a hop filter which is proving interesting :)

This is the kit I got

http://www.brewuk.co.uk/store/index.php/micro/complete-woodfordes-starter-equipment-set.html

The only thing I have read on changing this kit is to use safale s04 yeast and spraymalt instead of sugar. Although I just used the kit yeast and tate and lyle, and very nice it was too :)

Going to do a few more kits before I try an all grain brew.

I get loads of help and ideas from jimsbeerkit forum.

Platinum, I have heard some not so good stories about that site you linked, but have never ordered from them before so cant say for sure if they are good or not.

The kit you linked to comes with '1 gas charge + converter', is that an injector system for the keg?

Yup, you see that little red thing on top of the kegs screw cap? You insert a CO2 bulb into it and screw it down until the CO2 is blasted into the keg

The kit I was looking at didn't come with one of those, it would've cost me at least another £20 to get one. Cheers.

Did you buy your kit from Brew UK?

I bought my kit from Brew UK. Very good quick service.

I found I needed to use the gas when the keg was half full.

Also with those kegs, shut the valve at the quarter past position otherwise they tend to drip if you close it fully.

I didn't buy a kit, I do things the proper way (Malted Barley, Hops, Water, Mashing, Sparging, Boiling) ;)

I gave my sister's hubby a brew kit for christmas last year. Being a Yorkshire man he was very impressed!

The kit and sugar is fine for the Wherry kit. The key is treating the water or it can have a TCP taste. The resulting bitter is creamy smooth.

Well distilling as two safety points: poisoning and explosive vapours.

Although I'd like to have a go distilling, there's no way of me telling that what I produce isn't full of harmful byproducts or meths.

Distilling doesn't create harmful chemicals nor are alcohol vapours explosive, any flammable vapours are contained within the apparatus. All your simply doing is evaporating the liquids you want and then cooling them down again to get a pure sample.

I forgot - if you can leave the keg to age for six weeks with the Wherry then the beer is far better than the "14 days" they advertise.

I think I have a Wherry kit around somewhere. I could be persuaded to make it up. Seriously kits are like as easy as making fruit cordial! You'll do fine.

Remember: Planning Prevents Pish-Poor Performance. So if you need help we're here :D
