Ok so as a project I am looking to take up I want to make a 3D film, similar to that like Suzzie did off the Gadget Show with 2x Canon 550Ds. Now that is all great but I don't have 2x 550Ds however I can borrow 1 500D (hopefully find another :P), just wondering how good the movie recording on the 500D is? I mean it says 1080P, obviously not but how does it compare to say a Sony Camcorder that does Full HD.
Would it be good enough to do a 3D film if I had 2?
And anyone actually tried to make a 3D film from 2x DSLR's?
Thanks :)

EDIT: anyone seen Loreo lenses? what are they like?

Was this are typo? They record full HD, but only at 20FPS. You'll be better off using 720p.

The main issue though is the lack of manual controls, something that's quite important if you're shooting on two cameras at once.

No it wasn't a typo, its not the type of HD you get on sky, I mean it looks better but not awesome, thanks for the 720p tip :)

Sorry, I cant help you at all, but I'm going to keep an eye on this thread as I'd love to see you succeed in this awesome project!!

Actually, you'd be better of with Panasonic GF1s. IIRC there's a custom firmware that allows 1080p recording at a high bitrate with manual controls.

You will need to position the centre of the lenses 6.35cm (intra-ocular distance) apart, perfectly parallel to each other to get it to work and given the 500d body is bigger than that I think you may struggle. Sounds an awesome project though!

Actually, as long as the distance between the lenses is fixed, it should be alright. You can take 3d photographs just by shifting your weight from one foot to the other between shots.

Not a clue :)

I'm taking an EPQ so its more of an idea than anything but I know it can be done and instead of writing a boring essay over the summer, I think making a 3D film would be awesome fun.

Thanks for all your suggestions btw and I hope it will work out, only thing holding me back is equipment :P (fairly expensive)

He's thinking it means 1080i not 1080p. The Sky thing refers to the fact that Sky output at 720p/1080i and no 1080p option.

OP the 500D and the 550D both shoot 1080p but the 500D only shots at 20fp/s and no manual. Whereas the 550D can shoot at up to 30fp/s and fully manual. 1080p on the 500D is basically useless for this type of work. Two 550D's would be ideal, unless you drop both cameras down to 720p
