Homeplug problem

Since we upgraded our Virgin deal in the summer and had a new modem I've been getting prolific disconnections from my PC which is connected via homeplugs.

To make it slightly more difficult to trace the problem, when we had the upgrade I also upgraded the homeplugs so I could take advantage of the faster speeds, so I don't know if it's a router setting or homeplug connection problem.

Unfortunately, due to the socket lay out down stairs near where the router lives, I have to plug the downstairs homeplug into an extension strip along with everything else, I am looking at trying to address this but it's not going to be easy. But the previous slower homeplugs worked flawlessy in this configuration, I never once had a single drop out in about two years.

Do extension sockets have a big effect on homeplugs and is this likely to be the problem? It's a strange fault, I can play online games for hours and hours with no connection issues, but as soon as I just sit browsing the net it will all of a sudden drop out like in the middle of a YouTube vid or something, the quickest way I've found of solving it is just to open the network and sharing tab, then disable and re-enable the network adapter which instantly solves it.

Sorry for waffling on!

Extension leads aren't idea, but they just seem to slow things down rather than making the connection intermittent.

When it next fails:

  1. Check the status of the indicator lights on the homeplug adapters.
  2. See if you can ping the router.
  3. Check the status of the homeplug adapters using the utility software that usually come with them.
  4. If you have a wireless device check to see if you can still see the router, and if you can still get out onto the internet.

1. Nothing seems to change on the indicators.
2. Not sure how to do this.
3. Nor this.
4. Yep everyone else in the house reports no problems with their wi-fi connections, it's just me.

I get exactly the same.... random drop outs where I cant ping the router for about 30 seconds... it seems to happen more at night?

Im using tp-link homeplugs. Both are directly into a wall socket.

Sounds identical!

More often in the evening yes, and mine are tp-link also.

For me it's only an issue when browsing, for some reason when gaming I get zero disconnects.

I have tried different sockets, cables and so on and nothing seems to work. There is no flash update for the plugs even though people on the tp-link forums share the same problem.

I am considering getting some other brand as im getting sick of it.

Have you tried the utility software? It's available from the TP-Link product page.

It should tell you whether your PC is losing its connection to the local adapter, or if the connection between the adapters is failing. The fact that you can fix it by simply disabling/enabling your network connection could point to a PC problem.

No its the adapters... they just "reset" somehow at random.

After the problems I head read that others have had im in half a mind to take them back to shirt land and try to get a credit note for some dlink ones or something.

the utility software doesn't do much, you can reset or change the network id that's about it.

I had an issue with the connection when 1 was plugged into a 8 plug surge extension.

Since having both on standard 4 plug extension I've had no issues. (separate ring as well)

This is what I'm thinking, send them back and swap them for something else.

Just took mine back and a got 2 sets of the BT Extender 500Kit... the only other ones were netgear, which I don't usually like as a brand due to past problems with routers lol...

I will report later on how I get on regarding disconnects and so on.

I noticed problems when mine were plugged into different rings (top and bottom or front and back)

Now on the same ring circuit and no issues at all. Plugged into wall at both points. (Can't remember the make)

I can only RMA mine as I've had them too long to return to Amazon, I don't really fancy another set of these as I don't trust them. I might buy some more and stick these on ebay or something.
