Just got a TP link 500mb kit, Installed it after BT engy finished installing sky fibre and all is working well.

The plugs are on the same floor, 1 room apart yet the signal is 40-60%, Is there any way I can get it higher?

Data rate is about 220mb, Is that acceptable for 500mb plugs?

They're getting quite warm/hot, is this normal?

Apart from ensuring they are in their own sockets not on extensions, there is not much you can do about the signal level.

That throughput is very good, I'd expect 300-350 but 220 is certainly excellent.

They usually do get very hot in general so nothing to worry about.
 
The other thing that could help is make sure both units are on the same mains ring circuit. It won't make a world of difference but every little helps. Extensions themselves don't impede the signal too much but the surge protection on some extensions can do.
 
One thing you can do that will give you a performance boost is to take the front of every plug socket in the house and give the wire retaining screws a tweak.

(Make sure sensible precautions are taken before working on the mains)
 
It sounds quite reasonable tbh, most homeplugs don't do anything like the rated speed. 220 is fairly acceptable imo.
 
1 little niggle;
When PC has been off and then boots, The homeplug doesnt detect this and so theres no network available untill i turn the power off to the homeplug then back on again.

Anyway I can make the homeplug wakeup with pc?

You shouldn't need to do anything. If they aren't coming out of standby automatically something is wrong.
 
what bremen said. I'm using the TP-LINK 200MBPs one and I've never needed to do that. It auto turns off and turns back on again when it detects ethernet connectivity from the PC.
 
There must be a problem then because it hasn't once came out of standby when I power the PC on. I've had to power it of then on again each time.

Anything I can do other than return them?

Try and set the network name again or pair them up?

Swapping them around would also work I suppose, if your router is always on then other one (which I assume is working and powering on fine) will work with your PC.
 
Tried renaming them, Re-pairing them and swapping them over..

It still just sits in standby mode when PC is booted, Is there something in my ethernet settings that needs changing?

Well if you've swapped them over and the problem still persists it could be to do with the ethernet port on your PC or possibly the settings. Is the ethernet port set to power down when not in use?

Also you say the router one works fine, but I'm guessing the router is always on and hence has never been tested powering off then switching back on.

Try and turn the router off and then put it back on and see if the homeplug is suffering from the same problem. If not then it would suggest it is not the plugs and something to do with your PCs ethernet or it's settings.

Power saver options:

Respond to ARP requests without waking system - TICKED
Respond to NS requests without waking system - TICKED
Energy Efficient ethernet - TICKED
Reduce link speed during system standby - TICKED.
Reduce link speed during system idle - UNTICKED.

Wake on Lan:

Wake on magic packet - TICKED
Wake on magic pack from power off state - TICKED
Wake on Link - TICKED
Wake on pattern match - TICKED

That's all thats in power management, I've just updated the ethernet drivers from Asus so ill see if that helps.

edit: when I power off the router, The plug its connected too goes into standby after a short while, So it must be settings on PC?
I've never changed any settings from default for Ethernet :(

No probs,

So the plug on the router side goes into standby, but does it come back on when you power the router on again? As that's where it's stopping on the PC side.

I've got the exact same ethernet port, are you using Windows 7?

On the power management tab I've got 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power'

I can't see all those settings you've noted but I've got driver version 11.16.96.0 Dated 15/03/2012.

What version have you got (if you have Windows 7)
 
Yeah I'm on Windows 7. I just tried the Router end again and when I power the router back on, It does automatically wake up that plug.

I updated my ethernet drivers to 11.13.51.0 - 20/07/2011 (Which means the ethernet drivers I just downloaded from Asus's website didnt install correctly lol) :(

I'll go try updating them again.
