The dialogue sounds bad because you don't have a center channel. Nothing will fix that apart from getting a center channel; changing from one stereo system to another stereo system will not fix it

Not necessarily. My HT system sounds fine with a movie pressing "stereo" or switching the center off.

I’d just like to add that watching stuff on apple tv plus AirPods pro is quite the experience if this can be replicated with two HomePods then its a win all around. For the price I don’t think you can do any better.
