Hoping to upgrade this year, what to wait for?

I currently have a Ryzen 2700X setup, which I'm not too happy with, few different components not working well with each other.

I was thinking of doing a new build this year, CPU, motherboard, GPU and maybe RAM.

I was hoping to stay AMD, but I'm a little confused about what's coming out this year.
Initally I was going to go for a 3800X, then heard the 3800XT is meant to be out soon. But there's also the Zen 3 series, but is that actually coming out this year?

The MSI Tomahawk and a 3700x represent the best upgrade at the moment imo. The MSI Tomahawk looks like it will be THE X570 motherboard to own with no compromise in features and will easily last until AM5 is mature with room for easy upgrades to Zen3.

The 3700x just had a big price drop in the USA down to $260 so this will likely soon be reflected worldwide to clear inventories for the new XT series https://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-7-3700x-is-on-sale-for-an-all-time-low-dollar260

I will be buying this combo hopefully with the discounted 3700x and then upgrade to Zen3 later in late 2021 or early 2022 to add another couple of years to the life of the platform.

This motherboard? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-am4-ddr4-x570-atx-motherboard-mb-351-ms.html

It's £230! that is a lot to spend on a motherboard.

I was thinking more like a B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC for £140.

I've been looking at if I should get 16GB or 32GB memory. The 8pack 32GB 3600Mhz CL16 set for £215 looks good but maybe it's overkill for gaming. Not sure!

Either way excited for the XT range and Zen3 range.

try and solider on unless its unbearable. the new amd cpus are supposed to be this year and upto 15 -20 percent quicker. thats a big jump over the current crop. especially for a few months wait.

I'm still holding my breath that we'll see that percentage increase in gaming, in particular with minimum fps where it really matters. 15-20% in that area would put their new mainstream gaming CPU (4600x most likely) level with a 5ghz+ 9700k/10700k

Currently you only need 16Gb for gaming.
Save some money and if you NEED 32gb later just buy another 16Gb of the same memory.
That could potentially save you enough to buy the better motherboard or spend it elsewhere :)

Wait for B550 before you make any decisions as then Zen3 compatability is guaaranteed. Also 32GB is unnecessary unless you are doing heavy productivity tasks like rendering. For gaming, only 16GB is needed.

The new B550 boards are out in a week so you might catch a nice replacement for that B450 carbon with added features such as PCIe4.

True but doesn't quad memory affect performance negatively? so if I got 2x8GB now and another 2x8GB later on will that decrease performance with Ryzen?

True regarding B550. But to be honest would PCIe4 affect my situation realistically? I have a 2080, regular SSD and bog standard everything else.

Depends on how long you're planning on keeping the motherboard. PCIe 4 may prove beneficial for future cards that you will drop in.

Do your research to aid your decision, plenty of videos out there explaining the differences. PCIe4 will futureproof the mobo somewhat until AM5 has matured in 2022/2023. :)

People keep saying to wait but i wanted to build at the beginning of lockdown and got told the same thing. Here i am with the lockdown pretty much over and i missed out on all that time enjoying a new build. Probably getting a B450 Tomahawk/Ryzen 3600 this weekend.

its not just that. many bugs issues will be ironed out. better mobos. better support. its a great time to be hopping back on a AMD platform. right now is no mans land.

Hmmm, most people here are buying a new CPU only for gaming really. What are all these bug and support issues that prevent people from playing games on current processors?

I can understand people hanging around as the new series should be here within a year, but I just can't see it offering astronomical increases in gaming performance. It will be one of those where the gains look great on 7zip and productivity bench graphs but only a slight bridging of the gap with Intel in gaming imo. What you'll get for your money should smash the competing Intel platform though.

heat , overclocking , ram issues , motherboard issues , low core speed on some chips , bios issues. bad mobo design small fans not needed. to name a few.

why have any issues when you can have a newer faster cpu in a short period of time. also with better mobos with no fans on. if you want something now get it but we just about to leap to a better cpu selection. just wait. wont be another jump for a good while.

There seems to be an awful lot of people who've bought into the current platform, who are happy to put up with those issues then.

Where is the guarentee that the new platform won't have any of those issues?

Wait for zen 3 if it’s not for you pick up a cheap zen 2 second hand after zen 3 is released.

If you impatient then buy whatever you feel you need now.
