I overclocked my E8400 to 3.6GHz when doing nothing it seems to switch between a multipier of 6 and 9 changing the speed every 5 seconds or so is this normal. But when i ran orthos after about 2 minutes the temperatures reached about 92 degrees, surely this cant be a normal temp? Also the stock fan seems to be running slow how fast should it be spinning its about 800RPM atm.

multiplier jumping sounds like intel speedstep to me (turn off C1E and EIST to disable)

92 degrees is very hot, is the cooler sat correctly?

what is cpu voltage set to?

can you fit a better cooler in your case?

intel Speedstep, needs to be disabled in the bios thats whats giving you frequency changes.

92degrees is killer hot DO NOT run it like that, you'll probably fry the chip, I suggest you reseat the CPU cooler and check youve got good contact. Also I suggest upgrading from the stock cooler if your overclocking.

As soon as i saw it running that hot i turned everything off and opened it up, ill try turning speed step off and reseating the cooler, thanks. I can fit a new cooler in got any suggestions of a good one?

Arctic Freezer 7 Pro will do you nicely. Cheap, and fantastic performance. You'll probably want some thermal compound too (I can't remember if the AF7Pro comes with any).

if it's seated correctly, it should drop the temps on your cpu by at at least 30 degrees (from 92) and allow you to get more out of your CPU

The temperatures you quote in the OP, is that tcase or corre temperature? While it's hot for core it may well be within the safe operating range.

I might go for that and some thermal compound will this drastically reduce the heat and will it allow me to push it to 4GHz?

You don't need to buy thermal compound separatley, the stuff that comes with it is actually very good.

Using Speed fan the temperature of the case was around 26 degrees the cpu was 90 and the both cores were about 95 or so. Ok i think i will get the artic 7, will i be able to OC to 4GHz within safe temperatures? Also does disabling speedstep shorten the lifespan of the cpu?
