Hot desking at work... bring your own mouse and keyboard?

Eugh. Reminds me of a place I used to work - two shifts. The night shift would use some of the dayshift's desks. Often (OK, every night) they would indulge in greasy takeaways. Needless to say they had not heard of serviettes.

Not nice for those coming in for the morning shift at 7am! Pizza grease with your coffe Sir?

Hot desking has its place, but its usually because certain employees aren't in the office enough to warrant deskspace of their own. In which case they should be able to work on their laptop without any extra kit....for the few hours that they will be in the office.
Not all hotdesks need to be setup with monitor, keyboard and mouse. It's daft that they are, especially in situations like this.

With the amount of people that don't wash their hands after visiting the toilet, sneeze/cough into there hands etc then there is no way I would use the supplied keyboard and mice

Always had a mouse with my laptop when I went hot desking but the mouse was paid for by the company.

Hotdesking and open plan officers, they are rubbish.

I took my old cherry evolution stream xt to work (it works but for gaming i needed a new one) and my old steel series kinzu v2 and i bought new steel series mouse mat. Is definitely better if you do a lot of typing at work and obviously mouse is better.

I keep a mouse in my laptop bag, and a keyboard in my locker. Everyone is given a brand new mouse/keyboard when they join.

Lots of the hotdesks do have a keyboard/mouse left there, but yeah I wouldn't use them. Some people don't even get the idea of washing your hands after going to the toilet  :(.

The office i sit in is hotdesking and open plan. Some people have bought there own monitors and don't let people on them desks though now which is funny

Sounds like a pain. What's the logic behind it?

Capacity. In my team we frequently have to visit sites and work externally, and we don't have enough space for designated desks for everyone. In theory it's a good idea I think but only if you force everyone to keep all their paperwork and personal items in lockers.

Also if your job generates a lot of paperwork it can be frustrating as you would have to file it every day.

I hand out wireless mice to all our laptop users by default.
But keyboards are by request only asaic, as they already have one :p
Hotdesking is a pain, but needs must when you need to economise with space.
Some folk still get terriorial about the hotdesk that they 'usually' use, lol.

Open plan is a flippin nightmare, can't hear a thing when you're on the phone.
Glad i live in my little IT dungeon all on my own, with my little makeshift gym :D

I never hot desked but I still used my own mouse (old surplus Roccat Kone that had a dodgy scroll wheel) when I worked at HP.

I've never heard of hotdesking in any working envornoment!

I've worked in a number of offices and call centres over the years, every one gets assigned a desk and it doesnt change.

40% of desks at my HP site were hot desks.

I work in the NHS and some of the areas have decided this is a good idea. I can't think of much worse infection control wise tbh.

Some people are just disgusting. This one women at work her laptop keyboard looks like she vomits on it. I don't think if i set out to make my keyboard dirty i could make as dirty as she does. Looks like someone is just spitting food all over it constantly. I could handle using a mouse or keyboard for a day but i would probably clean it down first with some wipes, but every day sharing i would have to buy my own keyboard.

I used to work for a company that was in love with hot-desking*. I always kept an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and a Razer Bluetooth mouse in my bag. Neither is particular large or heavy and there's zero cables to plug in.

(* the upside was that we could work from home whenever we liked, which was useful.)

Depends on whether people are always located in the same office (amongst other things). My previous employer had a lot of consultants who were in the office to varying degrees so some of the desks were shared. On the extremely rare occasions (maybe twice a year) that 'everyone' was in on the same day there would be insufficient desks to house everyone so it just meant spreading out to desks from neighbouring departments (open plan) that were unoccupied on that day.

Working in government offices (Defra) you are forced to hotdesk. We all have laptops and the desks all have 24" screens with a keyboard and mouse (well some mice have now begun disappearing!) so I still use the clean one I was given with my laptop 2 odd years ago.

They do provide cleaning wipes for the very purpose of cleansing the crumbs / tea stains from your desk if you've been out of the office but I still try to sit at the same desk each time so others don't get the chance to spill their lunch onto my keyboard - how!!! like seriously how do they do this?!
