Been about the forum for a while and don't think I have seen a dedicated place for hot hatches. So here we go...

I am hopefully picking up my Hyundai i30n this weekend, all being well! Managed to find one for a good deal, 18 plate, 130miles on the clock in Slate Gray.

Having test driven over the last 4 weeks - M140i, Civic Type R, Golf R, Golf GTI, Audi S3. I was caught a bit off guard by how brilliant the i30N was, by far the most fun I had. On top of that the exhaust sound was the best by a mile.

This week is going to drag.

Thinking of picking one up in blue. Went to enquire about the price today. And test drive their demo model. (It sounds amazing, and feels rather nippy too)

Yeah love the performance blue. Would have had any colour other than red or black at the right price. Not the most BHP out there but I like the overall package. Especially for the price. I'm looking forward to seeing the i20N in 2020.

Yeah, red tends to fade eventually. And black shows up dirt and scuffs really easily. It’s not the quickest out there.. but it’s certainly quick enough. Looks great. And sounds great. And most of all is fun to drive.

They were telling me today that if you take it to a track it doesn’t lose warranty either.

They are nice motors, a lad here has one. I'm not too sure he was impressed when my old 2006 mk5 GTi outran him on the A500 though :D

Although we've both been left standing by our 60 year old director in her brand new S3, she likes her cars and doesn't mind putting her foot down :D

Lol bet that wrecked his month! I'm assuming your GTI isn't stock then ;). I did like the s3 but I found it was just too characterless and felt a little too sensible. That said they are wicked fast though.

Have to say the biggest disappointment for me was the Type R. Not the fact I would have to live with how it looks, but just didn't like how it drove. It was a cold damp day and it just could not get the power down (doubt the tyres helped), the infotainment system sucked and the backs of the seats were too upright. Would make a great track car but I'm not convinced on living with it all the time. Oh almost forgot the exhaust was very underwhelming :(. Was a shame, as it's a bit of a guilty pleasure.

Just picked up a facelift MK3.5 Focus ST3 in stealth grey, I would have been happy with a MK7 Fiesta ST but the other half was not a fan so settled on the focus. Have to say very impressed with it, performance is good and nice and comfy. My DC5 has been retired to a weekend car, don't think I can bring myself to sell it.

I would hope so, its significantly more powerful than the Golf (although the current does have 245bhp now it seems) , the GTI didnt really progress power wise like others, although they of course have the R and a variety of other specials.

Price wise its a good comparison

Yeah the GTI has been left behind in the power department. Which is a real shame as its a hot hatch legend, its feels well built and its easy to drive. Hoping the new mk8 will be better

The Golf GTI now occupies a space for people who are happy enough with a 'hot hatch' being fast enough, rather than the absolute fastest it can be.

The relentless march towards endless power and neck breaking 0 to 60 sprints isn't for everyone and those people are well catered to by the R if that's what they want.

Only an induction, cat back sports, lowered and it's a dsg so the faster gear changes can help. I don't know if it's mapped but the old owner wasn't sure but it can just beat 330d's so I'm thinking it maybe had a plug in map.

I'm stuck between saving, sticking a bigger turbo, hpfp, injectors, intercooler etc, rtech map and aiming for 400bhp or just putting that money into an S4. It's a fun car, i like the looks and you've got that vw club feeling with other dubbers. The s4, lovely car and it pulls but I just think, despite being faster it'll be a little boring.

Lad I work with had the Type R, one of this shape http://cloudlakes.com/data_images/models/honda-civic-type-s/honda-civic-type-s-06.jpg

It had a massive supercharger on it, lots of mods, diff's etc. It maxed out at 650bhp but they rolled it back a little. He said with the diff, decent tyres and a fast road setup he had no issues with the power. I need to spend some money on mine handling wise because I can get wheel spin at 60mph unless it's bone dry.

it's the people as well.

I know my mate was into the honda scene and he always complained it was really petty, arguing over what makes a type r etc. VW scene, seems to be more chilled and relaxed, lots of people willing to help people out etc.

My gti is 13 years old now and it's nice to drive, still shocks a few people and there's plenty of mods out there. I'd love a new gti or R but it's the cost, can't justify it when I've a new house to save for.

m135i here. 3 year old, had it from new but will be replacing later this year.

Enjoyed owning it, great car in theory but literally the only place you can floor it for any period longer than about 4 seconds is a motorway sliproad. The value is outstanding for something that would keep up with a late 90s Ferrari, but given the proliferation of speed cameras and traffic i'm just left thinking hot hatches have gone too far. Sometimes its nice just to thrash my girlfriends fiesta and not be in prison sentence speeds in no time.

Maybe I got old :(

Yeah sounds like your GTI is probably mapped, the 330d is no slouch. I would go for the upgrade option over the s3.

I loved the engine in the m140i I drove but I also got the feeling that I would lose my licence in it fairly quickly. Or bin it into a ditch if not fully on the ball :D

I think around the 200bhp mark is a nice amount of power for a hot hatch personally, any more and it just feels a bit pointless on the road so it's nice that VW still tend to that market with the regular GTi as it's not too compromised to outright speed.

Not a hot but warm hatch and have to say i have more fun on the road in my wifes Suzuki Swift Sport with its 136bhp than i did in my 300bhp+ Impreza
