Hot Hatches

Maybe, the 172 is a great car but I'd be very suprised if it beat a '6 round a twisty track.
You'd be surprised then.

And given that my 172 is a Cup, which is lighter, faster and has a wider track and uprated suspension so better handling, any time you're ready :)

I strongly disagree that the GTi-6 handles poorly
Comparitively poorly, be fair.

It felt competent at low speeds, but that was about it. At the higher speeds the front end went very light and it felt skittish.

I've never driven the Cup to be honest, just my cousins standard 172. It is a great car, I just prefer the '6. To the OP: Give both a test drive before you decide - you can't go too far wrong :)

I'd get a Clio Williams.

For £4k you could get a really nice example.

Look for a Williams 1 as these are more sought after than the Williams 2 & 3. Also slightly more 'rally' with no sunroof or front speakers.

Being a limited run of 400 they have usualy been looked after better than a 16v or VTS etc.

Try and get one with lots of history, and like Acolyte says, owned by an enthusiast.

The Williams has such a street presence and even though they are rare, everyone knows what they are.

Also, one of the best hot hatches ever made.

Aye, I think I said that I wouldn't be after a Clio 172 in the 3rd post in the thread after Fox suggested one. I've decided against the 306 GTI as well for various reasons.

I think for the money, having something chuckable, fun and not horrendous on fuel, I'm leaning towards the 106 GTI.

Shame it's easter weekend, as there's a couple within afternoon visit distance of me at the moment, I would have gone for a test drive to see if I liked how they drove. That said, I used to drive mum's 1.1 106, and loved the way that handled.

[edit] Leaning slightly away from the Clio Williams unfortunately - I've been doing some reading around the forums, and they seem a little fragile. I've gotta have something that's fairly bulletproof.

I think the 106 sounds like exactly what you want tbh.

The 4k revs@70mph might worry me slightly though.

I was thinking that... I'm used to the Cav being a low revver at speed. I guess I'll need to drive one down a dual carriageway and see how I feel.

Perhaps it'll curb my speeding on the motorways where I'm more likely to be snapped. The Cavalier feels so stable and comfy at 90+, doing less than 4000rpm that it's hard not to do so.

If anything it'll make you speed more lol.

The Valver is similar (4k~ish at 70Mph) which is right at the start of the powerband so you end up cruising at 90 because the power is on tap lol.

Thats suprised me, just come back from being out in my Saxo VTS and @4k revs mine sits happily at 80mph and @3k 60mph you sure them figures are right  the 4k mark is where all the fun begins tho :D

Weren't my figures, unless I'd remembered incorrectly it was said by someone else earlier in this thread :)

It was by me, its not quite 4k but fairly near. In both my GTi and my mates VTS.

Interesting, mine sits at spot on 4k @80mph not that im moaning :D

You could be right lol i might be wrong :p
Either way it seems quite high when im on a long drive somewhere.

You wont get a 172 for 4K. Also, the 172 would own a 6 round the track and be ahead of it in a straight line. I would go for a 106GTi

how not?

Plenty around for £4k ish

you definitely wont get a decent Mk2 172 for that money, and you wont get a decent mk1 172. You should expect to pay 5k for a fairly good condition mk1.

Quite a few cars have short gearing for performance reasons, with no sixth gear it can be a bit of a pain. 4k revs /70mph @5th gear is common in Hondas for obvious reasons
