Hot swap a HDD - Specific procedure necessary?

Hi all

I have a Cooler Master Silencio 550 case which comes with a hot swappable HDD bay. Cooler Master call this the "X-Dock" feature.

I have power connected to this bay plus a SATA cable and have verified it works with a HDD connected. AHCI is enabled, O/S is Windows Home Server 2k11.

I've plugged in the HDD and booted up, the HDD is recognised and I can read / write data to it.

I now wish to test out the hot-swap feature but I wish to do it safely / by the book instead of just yanking it out. I cannot find a definitive guide for this process, just professional servers etc...

Do I need to follow a "power down" process or similar for this specific HDD or can I just literally pull it out (when no read / write ocurring of course).

Likewise, can I just reinsert it or do I need to prime windows for the addition of a HDD?

Thanks

Mike

Does your board have hot swap in the BIOS? Set it to enabled, then power off the hdd and unplug it,that's what I do,Idk how you'll get on with no hot swap support in BIOS
