does anyone know of a storage enclosure that takes PATA drives, that can hot swap and can raid. JBOD is all i need. i would like a 4 or 8 bay enclosure, either rackmount or standalone enclosure

It does when used with a proper 3rd party controller. Used to use some Compucase trays with a RAID5 IDE controller, for the life of me i can't remember which but it was hotswappable. Theres also units connected by firewire that are hotswappable as its obviously not tied to the PC BIOS for detection.

Also has to do with pins on connections, part of reason it does not short and reset the PSU on SATA is the connection have 1 longer pin so it connects first and disconnects last, not all SATA controlers are made for hotplugging though, I believe the Silicon 3112 was not offically.

Thats more or less overcome with caddies... ever heard of those? SCSI uses em a lot ;)

Im not on topic of Cadies or SCSI, someone meantioned SATA above and its fact not all controlers offically support Hot Swapping, I think it needs have SATA2 support (not same as SATA300).
