Hot/warm hatch <5k

Right, now we're getting somewhere. They've come back with a new figure of £4060. That's still not market value, but it's much closer. I said I wouldn't accept that either and she asked me to send links to three separate ads for similar cars. They average out at £4700 so hopefully there's more money to be got out of them.

Yeah, it's like playing insurance renewal, the first offer is always ridiculous and a blatant attempt to "try it on".

I was expecting ridiculous, but not downright insulting!

One interesting thing was that to reject the first offer I had to give them the reference numbers fir the V5 and MOT and have a conference call with the DVLA. I guess this stops anyone who's told porkys about their mileage or let their MOT lapse , or not declared any offences being able to negotiate.

Echoing others I think for a 5k hot hatch I'd be looking at either a Clio (likely 182 or 197) or Civic Type R, possibly the Fiesta as well.

Drive each of them and pick which you like most as they all drive a bit differently.

Civic Type R, thats what i want/i would buy

and im driving a Clio Sport 172 at the moment, but cant afford to sell mine to get one
the CTR is deffinatly one of the best at your price range

i would still go for the corolla compressor over a CTR my reasons are
1. more BHP
2. Not as common as ctr, clio
3. reliable
4. cheaper insurance
5. cheaper tax.

dont disreguard it have a look in to them / test drive if it doesnt look like something you would like then fair enough but just because its not as common as muck / popular as what ever one elese has doesnt mean its not a good car :)

It's bloody hard to find a decent charged corolla - the Civic is also, imo a better all round car but the Toyota is far from a bad one.

Theres a thread on TOC called, "Whats wrong with your Compressor today"

Personally it wouldnt bother me I'd be happy to have the rarity and I have a great Toyota main dealer locally but its worth mentioning that they arent that reliable for a jap hot hatch

Victory :)

The insurer just rang back with a new offer of £4500, which is what the car was actually worth. Three phone calls and an email over three days. It stinks that you have to do all this arguing to actually get what your car's worth, but you do get a nice feeling of satisfaction when they eventually cave in! That's £1300 more than their first offer.

I'm going to look for a Fiesta ST, a 182, and a Type R to try over the weekend or next week. Actually looking forward to going car shopping now the cheque's on it's way :)

As a DC2 owner, 5K will get you a nice 98 Spec JDM or a UKDM. Be warned, they are approaching that age where rebushes are required so budget a grand or so for that. I'm just weighing up that option now.

Regarding running costs, I get 280 to a tank with mixed driving and I tend to have a pretty heavy right foot. The B18 sounds immense on cam out of the box, and despite general concensus on VTEC lumps doesn't have to have the nuts wrung off it to get the best. Alas it's more fun though. :D

Downsides are rust, particularly rear arches as well documented and the aforementioned bushes. That said, so long as you find a loved one then there's little to worry about so long as you keep up the love.

Having owned an EP3 also, the K20 is a better lump which is more refined than the B18 but sounds much more sedate. There are times when I miss my EP3, but the DC2 wipes the floor with it in the handling stakes. To quote a TRO forum member: "there are times when the teg winds me up, but find a good set of twisties and it's all forgotten. Simply put, the handling is sublime."
