How big is 1TB?

How could you fill it. What do you guys have on your HDD's?

I have over 500GB of stuff (and no its not porn :p ), backups of dvd's etc which have been converted into AVI to take up less space so anyone who hasnt converted them could easily make 1TB. :)

agree'd its easier to fill up than you would think. i have 59DVDs which take up 209GB so if you say 57 dvd's for 200GB then 570films will give you 2TB

then if you go into HD they are a minimum of 10GB per film.. easier than it sounds to fill a hard drive.. i have 600GB filled.. i just cant afford another drive yet

Its not really that much storage.

HD movies will being backed up shortly (averaging 40gb or so) along with better quality pix and MP3.

Seagates roadmap has drives in excess of 10TB within the next 5 years simply to handle all the new 20Mb Pix, 30Mb Audio and 50Gb Video files.

Flash memory will never replace HD & I doubt you will ever see flash memory getting above 100GB on a device smaller than 6" due to the basic laws of physics (and even if you do - it will be well above £1000- compared to £100 for a HD). They will exist alongside each other for many years to come though.

The drives will retail around £700 and they have been working on them for the last 8 months or so.

Due out in May in the usual Barracuda 7200.10/11 flavours with Read/Write heads that I participated in making only last night ;)

Umm where did you get £700 from, Hitachi are releasing their perp 1TB drive for $400 according to several sources. Seagate would be insane to relase the same capacity drive for £700!!!!

Wouldn't you like to know :p

If I were to reveal the price - I would be disclosing company secrets.

But the fact you questioned it - means you are interested already. ;)

And for the record - the expected (recommended) retail price of the 500GB drive a few years back was £700. It went on the market at £350 I think (simply because Seagate wanted to be the first with the 1/2TB drive)

No one knows how much the drives will be in the shops. I would say around £370 (Usually £30 less than the competition) - But thats just my thoughts ;)

And Hitachi are banking on a 5 platter / 10 Head drive being reliable - Nice marketing, but logic just doesn't come into it

You don’t need 5 hard drives for RAID5. The number is the type of RAID set up, and in the case of RAID5, can be done with as little as 3. Edit: Just realised after posting though that you are probably refering to the amount needed in R5 to actually have a TB of space?

Is there a link to a source for this news? I can’t see this coming out very soon. With the current cost of flash memory, surely it would cost in excess of 5k?

I know you need a minimum of 3!... Its just if you want 1Tb of storage space in RAID5 you need 5x 250Gb Drives! :p

Ooo Just read the rest of your post!... You knew I know!... Hmmmm :D

i allways thought that hard drive manufacturers saw 1gb as 1000mb
but windows sees it as 1024mb

so therefore you loose 24mb per gb

and you loose 24gb per Terabyte

and you loose 24tb per Petabyte

ect, ect, ect

oh and just cos i know the amount of gb in a Zettabyte im gonna post it here

Zettabyte =1,099,511,627,776GB :P

wow just looking on this site i have found out why they have diifernt sizes

Although data storage capacity is generally expressed in binary code, many hard drive manufacturers (and some newer BIOSs) use a decimal system to express capacity.
For example, a 30 gigabyte drive is usually 30,000,000,000 bytes (decimal) not the 32,212,254,720 binary bytes you would expect.

When used to describe Data Transfer Rate, bits/bytes are calculated as in the metric system

if you would like to look up some more on the information the lik for the site is

i believe i am allowed to post the site as i dont think it is a competator however if a moderator does remove the link pm me for it!

just thought i would throw in my 2 cents (even though im not from america! :P)
