Im not asking how big is the drive as in writtern ont he box size more of a how big is it in the real world
i have an ocz 120gb ssd
yet i only get 111gb
is everyone elses the same?
No, 120 GB = 111 GiB. Nothing to do with overprovisioning.120GB SSD with 111GB usable. It's over-provisioned.
I'd love to know why the software designers and the drive manufacturers can't get their act together and get the right numbers in the right places. Like you say, the issue's been there for long enough. No, 120 GB = 111 GiB. Nothing to do with overprovisioning.
If you're referring to a "120 GB Vertex 2(E)" then the overprovisioning comes from the fact there's actually 128 GB of NAND and only 120 GB (111 GiB) is used.
It does sometimes astound me how few people seem to know about the difference between kB/MB/GB/TB and KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB in a forum dedicated to HDDs, especially when the discrepancy has existed for 20+ years.
